Livestock market and auction news
Omaha Weekly
Thnnday, Jan. •
Report Supplied by USDA
CATTLE: Slaughter steera and
heifer prices dropped sharply this
week with closing levels standing
2.00-2.50 below last week’s closing
trade. A broad downturn in
wholesale beef realizations (3.00
4.00 lower on carcasses, 2.00 lower
on boxed beef) led the live price
structure lower. A fairly liberal
F.I.S. slaughter rate also kept
downward pressure on the market.
Overall finish proved just so fair,
as many producers continue to
market cattle with shorter than
normal feeding period. Slaughter
cows .50 lower for the week.
Slaughter bulls steady.
Estimated 5 day receipts this
week 8,100 compared to actuals
last week of 5,415 (for the holiday
week) and actuals last year of
9,652. Slaughter Steers comprised
45 percent of the receipts,
slaughter heifers 39 percent,
slaughter cows 9 percent and
feeder cattle 6 percent.
