On being
a farm wife
-And
Joyce Bnpp lftg|
Question; What’s old, but new
close, but far away— huge, but
tiny- the same but different
visible on probably every farm in
the country- and not likely to be
found at the Pennsylvania Farm
Show, showcase for big, new
agriculture phenomena?
Why, Halley’s Comet, of course.
Some weeks ago, I began
amassing newspaper clippings on
how to locate this outer space
visitor that comes around only
every 75 or 76 years. After all I
don’t expect to be here the next
time.
What concerned me was that my
knowledge of constellation location
centered solely on being able to
point out the Big Dipper-unless
you can count recognizing the
moon when it comes up over the
alfalfa field.
Fortunately, the junior farmer of
the family is of junior high
planetarium studies age, and was
able to get a sneak preview on the
comet’s early December sky stage
appearance.
For a couple of fruitless, chilly
evenings, junior astronomer and
shivering mother headed for a
wide-open viewing spot in the
darkness of the com stubble. His
three-wheeler allowed room for
both of us to sprawl backward on a
hard, cold hauling rack and focus
our fieldglasses Heavenward in a
neck-wrenching aerobics position.
Even with consulting drawings by
the glow of the headlight, we came
up with empty lenses- comet wise.
Persistence eventually paid off,
and one night I stood along on the
hill in a stiff wind as a pinpoint of
blur crossed the lens. Right where
the map said it should be. Bingo!
Called out to share the ob
servation, the junior skygazer
focused on the area and grumbled
a disgusted verdict: “Fuzzball!
It’s nothing but a fuzzball.”

LEOLA FIREPLACE & S

M,W & Fn. 10-B,T&T Iv,
Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 11, 1986-B5
Still, cometmania has gripped
hold of me, and every clear night
magnetically draws me out beyond
the house, lugging fieldglasses and
the offspring’s Christmas
telescope.
It’s still just a blur, but I’m
learning. Here’s what I’ve learned
so far ;
-the identification of Orion, the
Pleiades, Pegasus, Aquarius
(where Halley’s is now), and a
rough edge on the comer of the
wagon shed where one can prop a
telescope.
-not to gaze skyward while
lugging feed, water and bottles to
calves outside in hutches. You will
not see the frozen hunks of manure
and ice patches put there to sur
prise you by a joking Mother
Nature.
-that beanbag chairs are super
for comet watching, if you can
sneak them away from the kids in
the house. They’re warm, wrap
tidily around you, insulate against
the frozen ground and put you at
the ideal level for the dog to lick
your chin just as you focus on the
blur.
—lacking a beanbag chair, a
woodpile is an acceptible alter
native, provided the right-sized log
can be found to prop one’s head
against.
—full grown cats should be
discouraged from leaping to one’s
shoulder while one is con
centrating fieldglasses skyward
from the blackness of the back
yard.
-kids even considering
sneaking up behind one’s mother
and grabbing her around the waist
while comet watching may be
legally disowned.
-the paved road is NOT a good
place on which to lie to scan the
heavens, even if only 15.9 cars
travel it weekly—not counting
tractors. Paved roads are blessed
with painful pebbles. Besides,
what would the neighbors think?
-to just ignore teenage family
members who poke fun at my
sanity for standing out in sub
freezing dark-of-night to “look for
something you think you see only
as a blurry fuzzball.”
Remember. If only comes
around one in a lifetime. And don’t
you want to tell your children, or
your grand children, or your great
grandchildren that, yes, you did
see that incredible outer space
iceberg visitor to our solar
system?
Hally’s Fuzzball.
