814-L*nc«ster Farming, Saturday, December 14,1985 York County 4-H'ers honor Robert Weikert BY JOYCE BUPP Staff Correspondent YORK - York County’s 4-H sheep and swine members honored their 1985 buyers during the clubs’ annual achievement night, held last Saturday at the 4-H Center. Special recognition went to Robert Weikert for his outstanding support of the 4-H livestock programs and sales. Weikert hosted the summer roundups at Weikert’s Buying Station, located in the former Thomasville Livestock Auction. In addition, he purchased a total of 17 lambs and 20 swine from the roundups for Weikert’s Meat Marketing firm, including some champions and class winners. Other buyers of champions and reserves were Stewartstown Milling, SunCro Associates and T.L. Polled Herefords, Reisinger Food Products and Hatfield Packing Company. A new award, for rate of gain, earned honors for lamb club member Greg Bankert, Hanover. Bankert topped a field of 119 head in the gain rate contest, with a daily gain of .688 pound per day on his project lamb. Finishing in the second slot was Chris Shaffer, tabulating a .633 pound gain, while Mark Eberly took the third award on a lamb gain of .626 pound per day. Travis Renfro and Alicia Strausbaugh split the fourth place honors, both with lambs averaging a gain of .566 pound per day. The lamb club added a roll call champions as well this year, with members accumulating points for brief presentations on their projects given at each meeting. Matt Klinedinst and Matt Sellers tied for first-place honors in the rookie category, while Jesse Deitz was second, and Mike Zeigler, third. Junior winner was Amy Dutrey, with Tammy Flory in the second place and Terry Flory, third. Topping the senior age group was Brian Klinedinst, Holly Crisamore in second, and a tie for third between Melissa Trostle and John Eaton. Both clubs recognized their champions from the two summer roundups. Alicia Strausbaugh and Sonja Shearer split the lamb champion honors in the two shows, with reserves going to Brian Klinedinst and John Myers. Swine championships were split between brothers Brian and Greg Bankert, with Brian also taking a reserve ribbon, along with Chris Shive. Also winning special recognition was a member of both clubs, Melissa Trostle. Melissa, daughter of Ronald and Yvonne Trostle, Red Lion R 2, is one of six national 4-H swine winners, named during the recent 4-H National Gub Congress in Chicago. She is one of just two national 4-H winners in Penn sylvania, and plans to use the $l,OOO scholarship prize toward her studies for a nursing degree. Delmar Lehman named Franklin Co. Shepherd of the Year CHAMBERSBURG - Delmar Lehman, 2314 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg, was named Shepherd of the Year at the Franklin County 4-H Shepherds awards dinner held recently at Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. The year-end meeting of club members and parents is held annually to recognize the achievements of the Shepherds in various categories. As a third-year member of the club, Delmar Lehman has progressed rapidly in his ability to raise sheep, finishing in the top ten of the carcass judging and in the market lamb competition. He is the son of John D. and Lois Leh man and a junior at Shalom Christiam Academy. Fitting contest winners were Ken Bixel, David Sheiss, Eric Sheiss, and Donnie Sheiss; Lamb and Wool Queen, Christiana Keener; Lamb and Wool Princess, Gret chen Christman; showmanship winners: Kelby Mowery, Gretchen Christman, Eric Sheiss, and Donnie Sheiss; and market lamb champions Eric Sheiss, grand champion and Bobby Martin, reserve champion. Enameled Suffolk sheep pins were presented for the following: most improved shepherds, Roger Carbaugh and Rachel Coady; most consistent and helpful member, Julie Dice; most effective fund raiser, Kelly Boyd; perfect at tendance; Kelly Boyd, Kelby Mowery, Craig Fusting, and David Sheiss. County Agent William Reagan congratulated Rachel Coady for completing the best project book. Weight-gain awards in the market lamb classes were awarded to Bobby Martin, Craig Fusting and Lee Golden. Appalachian Lamb Company, Greencastle, conducted the car cass grading for the club’s first competition this year.
