Blackburn system cuts stray volts
ST. LOUIS, MO - Blackburn, A
Division of FL Industries, Inc., and
a recognized leader in electrical
grounding technology, announces
the introduction of Electronic
Grounding™ products for the
detection and reduction of stray
voltage on dairy farms.
Blackburn’s Electronic
Grounding System is a patented
system that is guaranteed to
reduce stray voltage caused by off
er on-farm sources while main
taining the continuity and safety of
the existing electrical distribution
system.
The first step to solving a stray
voltage problem is to find out if one
exists and, if so, to determine how
severe the problem is and when it
occurs. To accomplish this,
Blackburn eneineers developed
the Waveßider* M Data
Acquisition System.
The Waveßider System utilizes a
personal computer, custom
designed hardware, a copyrighted
computer program and reference
electrodes. The system monitors
and stores information constantly
and quickly over a representative
period of time by measuring both
steady-state and motor-starting
voltage peaks which can last as
short as 1/1000 of a second. Stored
data can be displayed on the
computer’s monitor or printed on a
report for thorough review and
analysis.
Dairy farmers are encouraged to
review Waveßider data with their
power suppliers, veterinarians and
electricians to determine if
reducing the stray voltage will
help improve their dairy farming
operations. If stray voltage is
causing a significant problem and
the dairy farmer desires to reduce
it, the Electronic Grounding
System provides the answer.
The patented Electronic
Grounding System (EGS) will
reduce the stray voltage in the
dairy facility by safely redirecting
it into a grounding field located at
least 300 feet from the facility. The
EGS consists of three components
which are quickly installed without
interruption of normal dairy
operations.
The first component is a
network of reference electrodes
which sense stray voltage in the
dairy facility and near the cows’
feet where they are most likely to
be affected. This network of
electrodes provides input to a
compensating amplifier unit which
is also connected to the dairy
facility’s service entrance neutral
bar. From these two sources, the
amplifier determines exactly how

much voltage must be drawn away
from the cow contact area and sent
to the third component of the
System which is a remote
grounding field.
This grounding field consists of
20 to 50 buried copper clad ground
rods which are located at least 300
feet away from the cow contact
area.
The amplifier unit enhances the
grounding effectiveness of the 20 to
30 rods so as to approximate the
effect of 20,000 to 50,000 rods.
When properly installed by an
Authorized Factory Dealer, the
EGS is guaranteed to reduce stray
voltage on the protected facility’s
secondary neutral system to
between 1/25 and 1/200 of its
original intensity, with com
parable reductions in the cow
contact area.
The System has been field tested
for the last two years and is
presently in operation on over 40
farms. In each case, stray voltage
has been reduced.
A survey of these dairy farms
also shows that in many cases once
the stray voltage was reduced, the
farmers were able to achieve
improvements in milk production,
a decrease in somatic cell counts, a
decrease in cases of mastitis and a
decrease in time to milk herds.
Also noted were improvement in
breeding and labor productivity
and a reduction in electric power
bills.
Blackburn is presently ex
panding its dealership network
throughout the East.
For additional information or for
the names and locations of
authorized EGS dealers, call
Blackburn at 1-314-993-9430.
Deere announces financing
MOLINE, IL - John Deere has
announced new programs to waive
finance charges for varying
periods for major items of farm
equipment purchased through the
John Deere finance plan.
Waiver of finance charges
reduces the interest paid during
the term of a retail financing
contract. If payments are required
during the waiver period, the
program permits a faster buildup
of the buyer’s equity since all such
payments apply entirely to the
principal.
Under the newly announced
progiam, finance charges on all
used combines and new John
Deere combines will be waived
until the beginning of the use
season in 1986, and in some cases
until the beginning of the use
season in 1987.
