Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 23,1985-B5
On being - .
a farm wife r^—Ju
-And
Joyce Bupp
I’m thankful.
Sounds a bit trite, doesn’t it?
Thankfulness, we probably all
sometimes forget, isn’t just a
feeling to be trotted out for the
fourth Thursday in November.
Surely we share a thankfulness
for the obvious; freedom, family,
friends, food, shelter and above all,
a God who keeps on blessing us in
spite of ourselves.
Thankful. For little things.
Thankful for work. Well, maybe
not so thankful on a zero degree
January morning with howling
winds and frozen barn water pipes.
Or maybe not so thankful on an
August afternoon of 98-degree
heat, 98 percent humidity and five
loads of heavy bales to go into the
top of a nearly-full haymow.
Gosh. How dreadful it would be
to day after day crawl out of bed at
noon with no demands, no
obligations, no responsibilities. No
goals. Oh sure, a couple of days
loafing on the beach seaside, or
lolling away in the woodstove
coziness of a mountain camp are
priceless—and necessary. But
everyday? No thanks.
Thankful. For kids picking at
each other. It means-I
think-they’re healthy and per
fectly normal. That is, if normal
means finding teenagers Indian
wrestling in the sawdust in the
middle of the dairy barn alleyway
during milking.
Thankful. For the few fresh
flowers still defying Jack Frost
and the horde of kittens who find
my flower beds a sort of feline
national park and recreational
system.
Thankful for newspapers, radio,
television. For pennies a day, we
go by satellite and computer to the
world’s most distant comers and
keep up with everything in the
news from township meetings to
world summit conferences. Due to
a meeting we attended last week,
we were without the “news” for
about two days...two days during
which a volcano blew and
thousands died.
Thankful for books. I can block
out everything-and sometimes
do-when wrapped up in an
engrossing volume (just ask the
farmer).
Thankful for a herd of bawling
baby calves that greet me twice a
day and keep my nurturing skills
sharpened. When they tease me
here about talking to my calves, I
remind the teasers that calves
can't talk back. Instead, they
nuzzle my hand-and only oc
casionally butt me in the shins, or
elsewhere.
Thankful for the phone, even
when it rings every five minutes,
and for our cars and trucks. These
are our lifelines to our loved ones,
businesses, friends, and mind
stretching activities and hobbies.
Thankful for checking accounts
and the postal service, for
dependable electrical service, hot
water, birds, and sunshine scat
tering diamonds among the wild
ducks diving in the pond.
Thankful that, at least oc
casionally, we can jointly pause,
take stock, and be grateful for all
with which-individually and
collectively as a nation-we have
been blessed.
