H'j time to enter Chicken Cooking Contest
ANNAPOLIS, MD - Your
favorite chicken recipe could be
just what you need to win a 10-day
vacation for two to Hawaii plus
$l,OOO, a Frigidaire microwave
oven, Sunbeam mixer, Wear-Ever
cookware, LP gas grill, and a
collection of McCormick/Shilling
spices. That’s the grand prize
package in the 1986 Delmarva
Chicken Cooking Contest and now
is the time to enter.
Held on an alternate-year
schedule, the contest is open to
residents of 12 northeastern states
(Virginia to Maine) and the

from each eligible state will be
chosen to receive an expense-paid
weekend at the Delaware coastal

ticipate in cook-off finals
scheduled for June 6 and 7,1986.
Recipes will be judged on ap
peal, taste, appearance and ease of
preparation. Broiler-fryer
chicken, whole or any combination
or parts is the only required
ingredient. Recipes should make
tour to eight servings and total
preparation time must not exceed

Included on the program of the
day-long session were alternate
dairy princess Kelly Kilgore, the
Gloryland gospel singers, and
featured speaker Dr. Catherine
Bene.
Dr. Bene, an eye specialist in the
diseases of the retina and vitreous,
is the daughter of a county Farm
Women member and related
having attended the meetings as a
child. She is a graduate of Eastern
High School and Franklin and
Marshall College, served an in
ternship at York Hospital and
holds her medical degree from
Delmarva Peninsula. For Further

Temple University.
Her slide presentation explained
the latest in treatments for the
retina and inner eye, especially
problems created as side effects of
diabetes. Diabetes, said the eye
specialist, is the leading cause of
blindness in the under-6S
population and second leading
cause of sight loss in all ages.
The newest high-tech treatment
of such eye problems involves a
process called laser
photocoagulation. A type of
magnifying glass is placed before
the eye, and a laser beam directed
through it to dissolve blood clot and
scar tissue, side effects of
diabetes. While some slight vision
loss may occur, it is far less than
that resulting from allowing
diabetic-related eye problems to
go untreated.
