DS-Lancastar Fanning Saturday,.November 16,1985 Purina sponsors FFA judging X KANSAS CITY, MO. - This month 132 FFA youths have the unique opportunity to participate in the National Livestock Judging Contest sponsored by Purina Mills, Inc. The judging, to be held during the 58th National FFA Convention this week in Kansas City, Mo., allows 44 three-member judging teams representing as many states to test their knowledge of livestock selection and grading using animals provided by farmers in lowa, Kansas and Nebraska. Purina Mills, a long-standing sponsor of the event, will provide funds for the administration of the contest, travel expenses, an awards breakfast, trophies and medals and cash awards to win ning teams and high scoring in dividuals. “The future success of agriculture and of the livestock industry depends on these young leaders,” says W.M. Jones, president of Purina Mills. “Our interest lies in developing this leadership and the livestock judging provides an important training ground for potential leaders. We are pleased to serve as the sponsor of this important program.” In addition to the recognition the members will receive, the com petition will enable them to get hands-on experience in judging marketing and breeding animals. “As in all national contests,” says fed Amick, Program Specialist for FFa, “this contest provides in centive to all vocational ag students to take a serious look at the livestock industry as a future career. Especially now, when youth involvement in agricultural careers is declining, the industry welcomes efforts by companies like Purina to reverse this trend.” In order to reach the national competition level, FFa members have been involved in contests at both local and state levels. The average team members have spent 50 hours preparing for this national contest, in addition to at least 100 hours spent in training for the local competitions.
