pointed out.
Eckroade noted that, although
birds must be injected on an in
dividual basis, only one injection is
necessary, making vaccination a
possibility for broiler flocks as well
as layers.
Will the University’s research
lead to routine avian flu vac
cination? “I don’t think we’ll be
going out and vaccinating all the
birds,” says Eckroade, pointing
out that once a virus becomes a
problem, a vaccine specific for
that particular virus’s serotype
must be formulated. The research
does show, however, that vac
cination can be a very effective
method for preventing disease and
mortality, Eckroade concludes.
In Pennsylvania alone, the 1983-
84 avian influenza epidemic was
responsible for the destruction of
more than 16 million birds.
The two-day Federation event
featured educational seminars on
Wednesday and Thursday, with the
presentation of the organization’s
Industryman of the Year awards
at Wednesday evening’s
Recognition and Awards Banquet.
According to the Federation’s
Tim Allwein, the honors go to in
dividuals who have made the
greatest contributions to the egg,
broiler and turkey industries
during the previous year.
Honored as this year’s Egg
Industryman of the Year was
Glenn Smith, the recently ap
pointed vice president and general

General Don Bailey will be a
featured speaker at the Penn
sylvania Farmers Union’s 14th
Annual Convention banquet,
Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Hotel
Hershey.

delegates,” said PFU Executive
Director Chester L. Reed. “Our

Smith began his career in the
poultry industry following high
school graduation in 1954, when he
joined Indian River Poultry Farm.
Employed for a short time by
Hy-Cross Company in Doylestown
as their operations manager,
Smith then accepted a position as
general manager of Chick Sales
Egg Farm in Hanover.
Smith joined Pennfield as a feed
salesman in 1976, and was named
sales manager of the egg division
in 1978.
In addition to being recently
elected vice chairman of PPF’s
board of directors, Smith is a past
president of the Pennsylvania Egg
Marketing Association, and is
currently a director of Egg
Clearinghouse and a member of
the Pennsylvania Egg Exchange.
He currently resides in Leola
with his wife, Sandy, and their
three children.
Named Broiler Industryman of
the Year was Paul Whipple of
Farm Service, a division of
AgriGeneral Corporation. A
Pennsylvania native, Whipple
worked as a dairy herdsman
following World War 11. Whipple
began a career as a feed salesman
inWysoxinlOSO.
After serving as assistant
manager of Farm Credit’s
Towanda office, he'took a position
as manager of the Lancaster Farm
Credit office.
His association with the poultry
industry includes a 20-year career
with Pennfield’s financial

scheduled to address the banquet,
providing that the Senate is able to
complete its day’s agenda in

The evening will begin with a
reception in the Fountain Lobby of

Herb Jordan was named
this year’s Turkey Industryman.
After earning his Bachelors
degree at Penn State, Jordan
served with the Air Force in
Korea, then returned to his alma
mater for graduate studies.
In his 26 years on the Extension
Service’s staff, he has published
some 500 magazine articles, and
has frequently been called upon to
serve as an expert witness in
litigation involving poultry
producers. He also serves as ad
visor to the Pennsylvania Turkey
Council.
The father of two children,
Jordan resides in Pleasant Gap.

Proposals for a whole-herd
buyout, he noted, “are not well
received either,” but he conceded
that the idea could resurface as an
11th hour compromise.

pushing hard for adoption of his
proposals, he’s allowing the
Congress some latitude in its time
schedule for completing the
legislation.

have a Farm Bill by
Thanksgiving,” Lane said. And if
Congress seems to be making
progress on the bill, the Ad
ministration probably will agree to
another short extension, like the
45-day extension which
reauthorized existing programs
just before they were slated to
expire Oct. 1.
A second extension of days or a
few weeks probably would receive
Administration support, he said.
As before, however, a longer ex
tension, for several months or a
year, would be “totally unac
ceptable,” Lane said.
