816-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 19,1985 Adams County 4-H Leaders recognized hr service BY SALLY BAIR Staff Correspondent MCSHERRYSTOWN - In a tribute to the many long hours of work they put in on behalf of the 4- H program, .Adams County 4-H leaders and teen leaders were recognized during a banquet at the McSherrystown Fire Hall during National 4-H Week Following the theme, "4-H for Youth for America” 120 leaders were honored for their service. A special award was given to Theresa Murren who has been a leader in the McSherrystown 4-H Club for 40 years. She received not only a leader’s pin with a diamond chip, but also a gold watch in scribed with the date and her initials. The Murren family has had a long history of service to the 4-H program, and Theresa said she was surprised by the special award. A silver tray was given to Helen Rex, a leader for 25 years with the Upper Adams 4-H Club. Other leaders received pins in recognition of five, 10, 15, and 20 years of service. In Adams County there were 289 adult leaders last year, and about 65 teen leaders working with the 653 4-H club members. Jared Tyson, Adams County 4-H agent, gave a plaque to Wolf Bus Company, York Springs, as “Partners in 4-H.” He cited the company for its cooperation in providing transportation for the many 4-H trips to the University and to other states Accepting the award on behalf of the company were Brad Wolf and Bill Gregory Elected to the board of directors of the 4-H Clubs of Adams County, Inc, were Sue Otto, 4-H leader representative; Kay Hinkle and Shirley Heltibndle, professional, business and financial representatives; and Ron Hoff man, general public represen tative. Otto is a leader with the Upper Adams 4-H Club and works with the Apple Blossom and Apple Harvest festivals and serves on the executive committee of the Biglerville Band Boosters. Hinkle is a 4-H computer leader and is employed by P.H. Gladfelter Co. in the sales department. Heltibndle is a leader with the Heidlersburg 4- H Club and has attended leaders workshops in Washington, D.C and University Park. She works at Bakers Restaurant. Hoffman, a Adams Co. holds first 4-H Beof Show/Sale YORK SPRINGS - The first Annual Adams County 4-H Beef Show and Sale was recently held at Wenger’s Saddlery, York Springs. Nineteen Adams County 4-H members competed at the show and sold their steers. 4-H member Scott Millar, Gettysburg, was selected to represent Adams County at the Farm Show to be held in January. The results of the show and sale are as follows; Missi Ortmyer, Aspers, had the grand champion 4-H steer. It was bought by York Springs Auto Auction, York Springs for $1.44 a pound. Missi placed fourth in the Intermediate Combined Fit tmg/Showmanship class. She received a trophy donated by the Adams County Beef Producers Association. Steve Steele, Littlestown, showed the reserve grand champion 4-H steer. It was bought by CCNB Bank, N.A., New Oxford. Steve placed third in the Sr Combined Fitting/Showmanship class. He also received a trophy donated by Farm Credit, Get tysburg. Jamie Boyer East Berlin, had th( ' npion lightweight steer. Kevin was selected junior champion fit ter/showman. A trophy was presented to him by Agway Farm Center. Cris Bell, Littlestown, had reserve champion lightweight steer. His steer was bought by Wolf’s Bus Lines, Inc., York Springs. Cns placed fourth in the Senior Com bined Fitting/Showmanship class. Todd Lebo, Abbottstown, had reserve champion heavyweight steer. His steer was bought by Lingg and Lingg Attorneys, Hanover. Todd placed third in the Junior Combined Fit ting/Showmanship class. Christy Darcey, Gettysburg, placed first in the lightweight class of the lightweight division. Her steer was bought by Growl's Custom Butchering York Springs.
