More than 500 contestants from most counties vied for awards. Members and their horses, all winners in county and district competition, were entered in 68 production classes and 32 per formance classes. County winners and their placings in performance classes were: Doug Deibler, Lititz, fourth in grooming and showmanship junior division; Mary Elizabeth Ewing, R 2 Columbia, seventh in saddle seat pleasure horses; Alida Farrington, Lititz, first in grooming and showmanship senior division, second in stock seat equitation-senior division and a fifth in western pleasure horses; Alison Farrington, Lititz, second in stock seat equitation-junior division and sixth in pleasure pairs; Brook Sweigart, Denver, first in saddle seat equitation senior division and Janet Wheat, Lititz, fourth in grooming and showmanship-senior division. Extension agent Jay Irwin pointed out that contest classes gave members an opportunity to display their skills in hor semanship and properly groom a horse for showing. Irwin emphasized that the primary purposes of the state 4-H horse program are to develop riding skills, gain self-confidence by competing in shows, receive training in leadership, and leam the meaning of responsibility by caring for an animal. The state show climaxes the year for nearly 8,000 Pennsylvania 4-H members enrolled in horse and pony project work. possible by improving their money management skills. These five leam-at-home lessons will be mailed every two weeks. This should be a family approach as cooperation and commitment is desired. r#v
