It is now 15 years since 1 started
writing this column for Lancaster
Farming newspaper. That means
that I’ve shared my life with
thousands of subscibers in some
780 articles
When I started writing, we had
four children at home and two in
college. Now these six are scat
tered from Old Town, ME, to
Seattle, WA, and they all have jobs
and their own homes. Meanwhile,

published in October 1970 and
another in October 1985. There is a
big difference and not only in size
The older one had 28 pages com
pared to today’s, which has 184
pages There were two pages
devoted to Livestock Market &
Auction News in the old issue and

near Ephrata and the three top
cows sold for $1,700, $950 and $785,
while the Manhenn Fair grand
champion hog brought a record
$1 42 per pound There were only
two public sales in the October 1970
paper but today's October issue
has some 60 listed Even then there
was a Mailbox Market with 19
entries compared to 264 in 1985
Some things remain the same
Dons Thomas had an article en
titled, Vegetables Are Vital To
Good Nutrition.” And, an IFYE
Ambassador wrote a report of her
experiences m Scotland. Farm
Women Societies reported their
monthly meetings and an in
terview with a Farm Market

1955 which means that soon it will
be 30 years old. Its subscribers
have grown to some 42,000 and they
