    MADISON, Wis. - Dr. Marla
Stolzman, a highly respected
animal geneticist from Warsaw,
Poland, was selected as the 1985
recipient of World Dairy Expo’s
“International Person of the
Year” Award. The International
Person of the Year must be from a
country other than the United
States ' and must have made
specific contributions to dairy
farming or the dairy industry on an
international level.
Dr. Stolzman was honored at a
special reception and recognition
banquet on Oct. Ist in Madison,
Wis.
Stolzman spent her earliest
years on her family’s livestock
farm in Poland. Her father and
grandfather Szankowski were
renowned breeders of purebred
cattle; importing bulls from
Holland and marketing breeding
stock, in addition to managing a
dairy herd of 60 milking females.
Following World War II the
family resettled in Krakow where
Stolzman obtained her un
dergraduate degree in agricultural
engineering. While still a student,
she took a job at the experimental
farm of the Zootechnical Institute
in Krakow, continuing to work for
this Institute for 25 years.
In conjunction with her work and
studies for her masters of science
and Ph.D degrees, Stolzman
authored over 80 scentific papers,
of which 21 were international
publications. Her thesis work was
an extension of job-related studies
and dealt with the use of partial
lactations in bull progeny testing
using the contemporary com
parison method. It was her
laboratory in which the results of
dairy progeny testing of bulls were
calculated for all of Poland.

Working through the Food and
Agricultural Organization of the
United Nations, Dr. Stolzman
conceived and carried out a
massive international scientific
test on the large state herds of
Poland, comparing different
