Delaware Holstein claims honors at Maryland State Fair
BY JOYCE BUPP
Staff Correspondent
TIMONIUM, Md. - An out
standing Delaware-bred, three
year-old Holstein has notched yet
another win in her record of vic
tories that continues to swell as the
summer tanbark season
progresses.
Cain-View Valiant Rose topped
the impressive three-year-old cow
class Monday at the Maryland
State Fair’s Holstein competition,
and then won Canadian judge
Lowell Lindsay’s favor for the
senior and grand champion ban
ner.
Earlier this year, the SWD
Valiant daughter earned top
honors in the Maryland State
Futurity, and was named cham
pion at both the spring Delaware
State Holstein Show and the
Delaware State Fair in July.
Bred and owned by the Delbert
Cain family, Cain-View Farm,
Harrington, Del. “Val” isn’t just a
pretty cow taking the show trail by
storm. In her first lactation, she
pumped out an impressive 365-day
record of 24,624 milk, with a 4.4
percent butterfat test and 1072 fat.
She scored VG-89 as a two-year
old, then bounded to EX-92 in her
second classification.
Following behind the champion
through the three-year-old class,
and then on to the reserve senior
and grand honors, was JFM Pete
Gwennette, exhibited by Marion
Andrew, Kents Reserve Farm,
Centerville. Sired by Straight Pine
Elevation Pete, she milked a first
lactation of 17,500 with 591 fat.
Judge Lindsay credited the pair
as “closest to what we’re looking
for” from the some 300 head
polished and paraded through the
fair’s spacious Cow Palace. He
especially praised the dairy
character and strong pasterns of
the champion, and commended the
strength and scale of the pair.
Another big winner was 13-year
old Matt lager, whose first-place,
four-year-old earned the Fulton 4-
with his 4-H project, a four-year-old Triple Threat daughter.
Maryland Holstein president Jimmy Hill presented a trophy
from the association.
P‘ s at the Maryland State
Fair Holstein show were, from left, Maryland Dairy Princess
Sheila Bender, Harold King with the reserve champion
Charles lager presenting the trophy, Wayne Pierson and
judge Lowell Lindsay.
H’er the coveted trophy for best
bred and owned entry. His Md-
Maple-Lawn TT Etta is by
Hanover Hill Triple Threat-Red,
and milked over 20,000 in her
second lactation.
Matt’s trophy joined a host of
awards accumulating at the
family’s Md-Maple Lawn Farm in
the wake of the 4-H project cow’s
winning ways. At the state 4-H
show, held earlier during the fair’s
10-day run, Etta was selected
Supreme Champion over all
breeds. She captured a similar
honor at the Howard County Fair,
and took the reserve spot in
Montgomery County competition.
Matt is the son of Charles and Judy
lager.
Junior champion awards went to
the winning senior yearling,
Aynestead Columbus Bridge
Drama, a growthy and upstanding
Leadfield Columbus daughter
exhibited by Philip Pierson,
Clayton, Del.
In the reserve junior champion
slot was the junior yearling winner
shown by long-time Maryland
exhibitors, Kingstead Farms,
Damascus. Kingstead Tony Jamie
is sired by Marshfield Elevation
Tony.
The prized premier banners split
between two noted Maryland
Holstein breeders, the Marlin Hoff
family, New Windsor, and Marion
Andrew, Centerville. Along with
the premier breeder banner, the
Hoff family copped wins in two of
the most prestigious group classes,
senior best three females and
breeder's herd of five females.
The several hundred spectators
at ringside remained attentive
through the day-long show, which
also featured awards to several
breeders and 4-H judging mem
bers.
