Elmira supermarket wins ADA cheese contest
SYRACUSE, NY - Tops
Supermarket of Elmira, N.Y., was
named the grand prize winner in a
national cheese display contest
sponsored by the American Dairy
Association.
This year’s contest offered dual
win opportunities for contestants.
Fifteen hundred participants were
named instant winners for early
registration, and all entries were
automatically entered in the
national contest for natural real
domestic cheeses.
During March and April, food
retailers and cheese industry
representatives were encouraged
to construct an out-of-position
merchandising display featuring
real cheese. Each display was
required to show a minimum of
four natural domestic cheeses such
as Cheddar, Blue and Muenster. A
panel of American Dairy
Association representatives
judged each entry on
imaginativeness, creativity,
merchandising effectiveness, and
attractiveness.
Dan Parsons, Dairy Manager of
Tops, and creator of the display,
was awarded the grand prize {or
his display depicting the Lincoln
Memorial. “It took a lot of work
and time to put the display

together,” said Parsons. “Not only
did it take time to dream up the
initial idea, but also over 70
working hours to construct. ’ ’
According to Parsons, an award
winning display gives a store a
quality reputation in today’s
consumer market. “The publicity
is well worth the effort,” said the
six year Tops’ employee. “We sold
a lot of cheese because customers
just couldn’t miss it.”
Pat Allan of Blackman and
Ebsary was named by Tops as the
participating cheese industry
representative. He received a
