Our vacation in Black
Moshannon State Park was restful
and yet a bit hectic. We drove to
different state parks to fish,
pulling our trailer and small
aluminum boat. At Prince
Gallitzin we caught twenty pan fish
in an early morning fog, but we put
some back because they were too
little. We both cleaned the fish
after eating outside beside a fire
that Allen started for hot dogs.
Some lakes were clogged with
water lilies and folks were casting
for bass there.
One day Allen and I spent a' few
hours hiking in the morning. There
were quite a few hunting cabins
among the fern covered
woodlands. A big red lily was
blooming here and there and also
some white straw-like flowers. In
the afternoons I went swimming in
the nearby lake.
When a notice was put on the
bulletin board telling of a super
vised hike on Sleepy Hollow Trail, I
decided to go, but my husband
opted for a nap. I had an awful
time finding the location to start

the walk. After a lot of inquiring
and fast walking, I arrived only to
discover that I was the lone par
ticipant. So the three park service
officers and I had a nice leisurely
and educational walk. I learned the
names of some new flowers and we
saw a young groundhog climb a
tall tree. People complained that
nothing was planned and then did
not attend when something was
arranged.
One evening we drove toward
Phillipsburg as I wanted to stop at
the Butler Cemetery. There were
headstones with “Fike” names on
them-1895 and 1900. Nearby was a
milestone “Phila.-Erie Turnpike
1821.” As I returned to the car, I
heard a crashing noise in the
brush. I told my husband that there
must be several deer in the woods.
But, then everything was quiet and
so I clapped my hands. A big black
bear stood up about twenty feet
away. “Let’s walk back to the
car,” I said. As we stood by the
open doors, I grabbed my camera
and took his picture as he crossed
the road.
