UNIVERSITY PARK - Dr. Harold V. Walton, professor and head of the department of agricultural engineering, retired July 31 with emeritus status. He has served as department head since 1976. Having taught at Penn State since 1947, Dr. Walton accepted a position at the University of Missouri as professor of agricultural engineering in 1962 and served as chairman of that department for seven years. Address City State Ag engineering chairman retires at Penn State From 1969 to 1971, Dr. Walton was chief-of-party for a University of Missouri program with the U.S. Agency for International Development at the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology in Bhubaneswar, Orissa, which is on the eastern coast of India. He was responsible for a University Development Program and an Agricultural Production Program to establish the Ex tension teaching model. An im portant aspect of these programs was faculty training and development at the University of Missouri. While at the University of Missouri, Dr. Walton’s primary research was in the area of agricultural structures and en vironment and later, in the area of food engineering. He has published numerous articles on the physical properties of poultry products, including “Composition of Shell Waste from Egg Breaking Plants,” “The Viscosity of Egg Substitute Mixtures,” and “Using Eggshells in Poultry Feed.” As a result of his research, some egg processors in Missouri use a dehydra ion system to eliminate shell wastes. He has served on the Executive Committees of both the Colleges of Agriculture' and the College of Engineering and on the Curriculum Task Force of the College of Engineering. He served on the Staff Power Planning Task Force for the College of Agriculture, which examined the organization of the Penn State Cooperative Extension Service. Dr. Walton served as a con sultant for the Organization of American States in Trinidad and Tobago in 1980, evaluating their agricultural engineering services and served as director of the League for International Food Education.
