    UNIVERSITY PARK - Dr.
Harold V. Walton, professor and
head of the department of
agricultural engineering, retired
July 31 with emeritus status. He
has served as department head
since 1976.
Having taught at Penn State
since 1947, Dr. Walton accepted a
position at the University of
Missouri as professor of
agricultural engineering in 1962
and served as chairman of that
department for seven years.

Ag engineering chairman retires at Penn State
From 1969 to 1971, Dr. Walton
was chief-of-party for a University
of Missouri program with the U.S.
Agency for International
Development at the Orissa
University of Agriculture and
Technology in Bhubaneswar,
Orissa, which is on the eastern
coast of India.
He was responsible for a
University Development Program
and an Agricultural Production
Program to establish the Ex
tension teaching model. An im
portant aspect of these programs
was faculty training and
development at the University of
Missouri.
While at the University of
Missouri, Dr. Walton’s primary
research was in the area of
agricultural structures and en
vironment and later, in the area of
food engineering. He has published
numerous articles on the physical
properties of poultry products,
including “Composition of Shell
Waste from Egg Breaking
Plants,” “The Viscosity of Egg
Substitute Mixtures,” and “Using
Eggshells in Poultry Feed.”
As a result of his research, some
egg processors in Missouri use a
dehydra ion system to eliminate
shell wastes. Feed producers then
process the dried material, which

State in 1976 to be head of the
Department of Agricultural

granted by the College of
Agriculture.
Although primarily concerned
with administrative duties, Dr.
Walton has taught the senior
seminar in agricultural
engineering. He has served on the
Executive Committees of both the
Colleges of Agriculture' and the
College of Engineering and on the
Curriculum Task Force of the
College of Engineering. He served
on the Staff Power Planning Task
Force for the College of
Agriculture, which examined the
organization of the Penn State
Cooperative Extension Service.
Dr. Walton served as a con
sultant for the Organization of
American States in Trinidad and
Tobago in 1980, evaluating their
agricultural engineering services
and served as director of the
League for International Food
Education.
In 1942 he received a bachelor of
science degree and in 1950 as

Ph.D. in agricultural engineering
from Purdue University in 1961.
Dr. Walton has served as
chairman of the Agricultural
Engineering Division of the
American Society for Engineering
Education (ASEE); as vice
chairman and chairman of the
North Atlantic Region of the
American Society of Agricultural
Engineering (ASAE), and this
year, began serving as regional
director of the American Society of
Agricultural Engineers.
In 1942 he was initiated into
Gamma Sigma Delta and Phi
Kappa Phi honor societies and in
1951, was elected to Sigma Xi. He
became a member of Alpha Ep
silon in 1962, and was named a
Fellow of the American Society of
Agricultural Engineers in 1973.
After retirement, Dr. Walton and
his wife, Velma, plan to visit their
three children, Richard in Texas,
Marilyn in Louisiana and Carol in
Nevada. “I plan to bring some
order to my stamp collection and
will continue to be active with
professional associations.
