MERCER - An estimated 5,000
people attended the 35th Annual
Guernsey Ice Cream Festival in
Mercer July 12 to consume some
1,500 gallons of homemade
Guernsey ice cream.
This annual event, begun as a
club picnic, continues to grow
every year. It is always held the
second Friday in July and has
become a dairy promotion and a
fundraiser for the Mercer County
4-H’ers, the 4-H park and the
Guernsey Club.
The whole community gets in
volved in the project with volun
teers mixing ice cream, baking
cakes, setting up, serving, and
Block receives Ford guide
Secretary of Agriculture John Block (left) accepts a copy of
Enterprise Farming 1985, newest edition of Ford Tractor
Operations' well-received “guide for small farms." Making
the presentation is Robert J. Nicolazzi, Ford Tractor's North
American general operations manager. The 98-page
magazine contains 30 articles that describe successful and
innovative small-acreage farming practices. Copies are free
to customers who visit participating Ford Tractor dealer
ships.
5,000 attend Guerns
cleaning.
About 400 dozen eggs and 1,200
pounds of sugar went into the ice
cream, a Guernsey Club original
mix. Over 1,000 pounds of
strawberries, 25 gallons of
chocolate syrup and 250 cakes also
disappered into the mouths of
hungry customers.
This combination of community
effort, farm fresh ingredients,
friendly atmosphere and good
weather draws people from near
and far every year.
The unique and popular event
has become a kind of institution in
the area and will most likely
remain a tasty and delicious part
of Mercer County for years to
come.
