Coyote kills reported
in Clearfield County
HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania
fanners have had problems with
deer, bear, racoons and even elk.
But, for the first time, farmers in
western Pennsylvania have a new
critter to deal with - the eastern
coyote.
A coyote was tracked on the
Kunes sheep near Frenchville,
Clearfield County, where it killed
20 of their sheep at the rate of one
every few nights. The method of
kill by grabbing the throat and the
distinctinve tracks led the Kunes
and area officials to believe the
culprit was a coyote rather than a
dog.
Timothy and Gail Kunes con
tacted the Pennsylvania State
Grange, who immediately
prompted action from the Penn
sylvania Game Commission. The

Commission brought in an expert
trapper from Lancaster County to
set the traps that finally caught the
35 pound female coyote.
Although the coyote is the first to
be killed in Clearfield County, they
have been sighted in Clearfield
and ether counties. Ihe Game Com
mission predicts the animals may
become more abundant in the
area.
Since coyote kills are a rarity,
there is currently no indemnity
program either under dog law or
Game Commission regulations to
reimburse the Kunes for their
losses. They estimate their costs
exceed $l,OOO.
The State Grange expects to
develop policy on coyote damage
at their 113th annual state con
vention in Warren starting Oct. 27.
