Flea, tick control NEWARK, DE - Unfortunately, the summer weather that brings sunshine, pic nics, cookouts and fun also brings ticks and fleas. Pet owners, in particular, know how hard it is to control these persistent pests. But relief is available. The Delaware Cooperative Extension Service has new, up dated information sheets on ticks and fleas to help with iden tification and control. The fact sheets were prepared by University of Delaware extension entomologist Mark Graustein. Many people don’t realize, Graustein says, that three different kinds of ticks infest the Delaware area-the American dog tick, the brown dog tick, and the black legged tick each of which present a different problem. Fortunately, few of the 1,600 varieties of fleas normally pester humans. Only cat fleas are common in this region, although others turn up occasionally, the specialist says. The fact sheets describe the insects’ habits and emphasize the potential health hazards of flea bites and tick-borne diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. The publications also offer tips on insect removal from pets and humans, and outline procedures for safe pesticide use to control ticks and fleas both indoors and outdoors.
