WELLSVILLE - Chester
County 4-H’er Betsy Colket took
the top spot at the York County 4-H
Livestock Judging contest July 10.
earning the high individual trophy
for the day-long event. Kelly
Weabor of Lebanon was high in
dividual in the junior category.
Lancaster took top honors in the
junior team division, while the
Chester County senior trio capped
that division. York County 4-H
livestock clubs hosted the event at
the Warrington Green Farms of
the Drs. George and Lois Kushner.
Top scorer Betsy Colket is 19 and
the daughter of Kimball and Joyce
Colket, Phoeraxville. A 4-H veteran
of 11 years of club work, she
became interested in livestock

Chester Co. 4-H'er tops York judging contest
judging five years ago after joining
the sheep project club.
She credits her success in
judging with practicing through
such events, and last year placed
second at the regional competition.
“When judging market animals,
you evaluate what the carcass
yield will be,” Betsy explains.
“Breeding classes are different;
there you look for useful breeding
and genetic traits ”
Betsy is a student at Ursinus
College, and is majoring in biology
with a career goal in the research
field.
She was one of three senior 4-H
judges who comprised the winning
team from Chester County, and
took home the revolving trophy
that will now remain in Chester

team are Dwain Livengood, Rob
Rush, Tracey Landis and Doug
Musser. Rush placed fifth in the
individual category, and Dwain
took the seventh place spot.

LEAMERSVILLE - A
homebred Spot gilt shown by
Sheila Biddle of Williamsburg took
top honors at the Blair-Bedford-
Fulton FFA Market Hog Show on
July 8.
Weighing in at 246 pounds, the
grand champion porker sold for
$1,056, when Hatfield Packing
offered the top bid of $4.40 per
pound. Biddle also received a
grand champion trophy from Ron
Bookhammer of Keystone Feed
and Flour.
At reserve was Kevin Rhodes'
hog, that also went to Hatfield for
$2.35, bringing Rhodes’ total purse
to $535. Mark Cole and Ray
Reighard of Curryville Agway
honored the reserve champion
exhibitor with a trophy.
At third place was Gina Hall of
Hopewell, who sold her 230-pound
hog to Shaw Packing Co. for $l.lO
per pound.e
Forty-one members competed in
the show and sale held at the
Farmers Market, that saw
representation from the Central,
Bellwood-Antis, Tyrone,
