HARRISBURG - The state’s farmers continued harvest of strawberries, peas and cherries during the four days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending June 9, according to the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service. Weather for the week returned to near normal in the wake of severe storms and tornadoes last week. Farm activities during the week included cleaning debris from fields in storm-stricken areas, making hay, cultivating corn, hillmg-up potatoes, and harvesting strawberries, peas and cherries. Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies were rated short by eight percent, adequate by 88 percent and surplus by four percent. All reporters in the northern region rated soil moisture adequate. In the central region moisture was rated 18 percent short and 82 percent adequate. The southern region rated moisture 86 percent adequate and 14 percent surplus. The northern and central regions report com planting 98 percent complete and the southern region 99 percent complete. By the end of the week, 80 per cent of the soybean crop was planted. Last year at this tune only 42 percent of the crop was planted. The five-year average stands at 52 percent. The northern region reported soybean planting 90 percent complete. The central and southern regions reported 74 and 75 percent complete, respectively. Wheat growers around the state reported 97 percent of the crop in the heading stage and three per cent turning yellow. Last year at this tune the wheat crop was 46 percent percent in boot and 54 percent heading. The northern region reported 98 percent of the crop has headed and two percent turning yellow. The southern section had 91 percent of the wheat crop headed and nine percent turning yellow. Some lodging reported in the southern section due to recent heavy rain. Statewide barley development was reported as 46 percent headed, 52 percent turning yellow and two percent ripe. Last year’s levels were five percent in the boot stage, 77 percent headed and less than ten percent turning yellow. The nor thern region reported 65 percent headed and 35 percent turning yellow. The central section reported 58 percent headed and 42 percent turning yellow. The southern section reported 23 percent headed, 71 percent turning yellow and six percent ripe. At the end of the week, 75 percent of the oat crop was headed. In the northern region 58 percent of the oat crop was headed. The central section reported 66 percent of the crop headed and the southern region reported 94 percent headed. None of the regions report oats turning yellow. First cutting alfalfa was 52 percent complete compared to last year’s cutting of 23 percent. First cutting clover-timothy was 27 percent complete, ahead of last year’s cutting of 13 percent. Quality of hay made was rated poor by 27 percent, fair by 50 percent, and good by 23 percent.
