New dairy feed from Agway SYRACUSE, NY - Agway has reported dramatic improvements in milk production and feed ef ficiency in tests of new Pro:Right RC dairy feed. Tests at the Agway Farm Research Center resulted in milk production increases of as much as 9.2 per cow. According to Dr. C. A. MacGregor, animal nutritionist for Agway Feed Services, regulated carbohydrates (RC) is a new concept that increases dairy feeding efficiency by regulating and balancing the carbohydrates in a cow’s diet. With the Pro:Right RC feed, both the cow and her rumen receive the correct amounts and balance of carbohydrates and protein. The result is greater ef ficiency and more profitable ratio of pounds of gram fed to pounds of milk produced. The RC concept calls for regulating the amount of non structural carbohydrate in dairy feeds to maximize energy ef ficiency in the rumen. Dairy scientists have discovered that, like protein, all carbohydrates are not the same. In order to unprove feed ef ficiency and milk production, dairy cows need specific amounts of structural and non-structural (NS) carbohydrate sources, as well as the right kind and amount of protein. With both forms of carbohydrate needed to meet the energy demands of high-producing cows, the problem dairy scientists faced was: What is the right amount and balance of NS carbohydrate to maximize milk production, while maintaining milk fat test? Research at the Agway Technical Center enabled Agway to establish new NS carbohydrate values for individual feed ingredients. Initial tests of gram mixes varying in level of NS car bohydrate were formulated and tested in milk production ranging from 5.8% to 10.0%, and increases in feed efficiency ranging from 5.2% to 10.0%. Dr. MacGregor reports all test rations had the same con centration of crude protein, energy, minerals, vitamins and regulated protein solubility. The only significant difference was the amount of NS carbohydrate. Susan K. Hoyt
