three directors from twenty-two
cooperatives around the state of
Pennsylvania, as well as New York
and Virginia, graduated from the
second annual Pennsylvania
Cooperative Director School
recently held at Penn State.
“Coming to the Cooperative
Director School will be one of those
decisions that will benefit you for
years to come,” said Dr. Samuel
H. Smith, dean of the College of
Agriculture at Penn State, at the
graduation ceremony. “This was
your chance to leam some
techniques and skills that will help
you as directors and managers
improve profitability and improve
the quality of farm and rural life.

membership of the cooperative.
Second, you are charged by law
with the duty to conduct business
reasonably.”
Chester Heim, Deputy Secretary
of Agriculture, said,
“Cooperatives play a key role in
keeping Pennsylvania at the
forefront of production activities in
the United States and agricultural
marketing. Leaders of these
businesses must recognize their
responsibilities and the op
portunities as directors in main
taining sound business
organizations if Pennsylvania is to
continue as a leading agricultural
state.”

The school was sponsored by the
College of Agriculture, Penn State,
and the Pennsylvania Department
of Agriculture with the cooperation
of the Pennsylvania Association of
Farmer Cooperatives (PAFC).
Faculty from cooperatives and
the College of Agriculture taught
two phases over a five-day period.
