On June 8, the Guild is sponsoring a quilt show and con test at Historic Schaefferstown which will feature 100 quilts in eight categories. According to Marlene Williams, one of the show’s organizers, the Guild is accepting the first 100 quilts, limiting the number because of the space available in the bam on the original Alexander Schaeffer farm. The quilts will be displayed on clotheslines in the mam upper portion of the barn. The show is open to anyone, and already there have been entries from neighboring areas in Penn sylvania. There is a limit of one quilt per person per category, and first, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded in each category. Judging will be done panel of four judges selected on the basis of their expertise in various areas. The show was organized because members of the Guild wanted to see work from the community, according to Hetty Wengert, another one of the organizers. She added, “We wanted to have one because of all our enthusiasm.” Indeed, Guild members are not lacking for enthusiasm, and seem to enjoy quilting above all else. Lynn Trump wore a T-shirt which proclaimed, “Quilting forever- Louise Bell demonstrates the quilting technique using a hoop, a very popular replacement for the more traditional and larger frame. Housework whenever.” At the group’s urging she shared some of her “quilting” philosophy, in cluding “Dust is a protective covering for furniture” and “We may skip a meal but never a stitch.” Calling quilting an art form, Kitty Zackey, who also teaches quilting, said, “I find it very satisfactory.” Then she adds with a laugh, “We don’t do housework.” She went on to explain that the judges will be looking at the quality of the workmanship, choice of color, choice and suitability of fabrics. Most of the quilts to be displayed will be modem quilts, but there are Marlene Williams, left, and H—;y -tgeiw iplay a w pattern quilt in the log house, a perfect setting for the beauty of a quilt. already some antique quilts en tered. For this show there is no tune limit on when the quilt was completed. Kitty points out that the chance to enter a quilt in a show and contest is an excellent learning opportunity. She noted that the judges at this show will offer private critiques on each quilt. “That will be very helpful,” she noted. It is evident that many Guild members are relatively young, many with pre-schoolers. Nevertheless, quilting is an im portant craft for them and they are eager not only to share their ex- (Turn to Page B 16) Joo* See your nearest HOLLAfND Dealer for Dependable Equipment and Dependable Service: Annville, PA BHM Farm Equipment Inc R D 1 717 867 2211 Beavertown, PA B&R Farm Equipment Inc RDI Box 217 A 717 658 7024 Belleville.
