Lancaster to host
HAMBURG “Come Alive in
’B5” is the theme for the national
meeting of the American Jersey
Cattle Club. The meeting will be
hosted by the Pennsylvania Jersey
Cattle Club at the Host Resort in
Lancaster on June 16th to 19th. In
preparing for this major event, the
Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle Club
encourages Jersey dairymen from
across the United States and
Canada to “Come Alive in ’B5” and
see the beautiful Pennsylvania
countryside, leam about Penn
sylvania’s heritage, and view
Pennsylvania Jerseys.
With a full agenda for the three
day meeting, over 500 Jersey
enthusiasts are expected to par
ticipate. After registration on
Sunday, June 16th, there will be
pre-convention hospitality,
courtesy of the Cumberland Valley
Jersey Breeders.
Monday, June 17th, features
tours of four Lancaster County
Jersey farms in the Peach Bottom
area. Unique to this part of the
county and of great interest to the
western visitors will be the un
maculate stanchion bams, upright
silos, and small herds of family
bred Jerseys. The tour will also
include a visit to an Amish
homestead and a view of the
Lancaster countryside. Lunch will

Recreational Park. The day will be
concluded with a family-style meal
at the Good and Plenty
Restaurant, Lancaster.
Tuesday, June 18th, will begin
with the National All-Jersey, Inc.
Junior breakfast and annual
meeting. A luncheon will be held at
the sale bam at the Solanco
Fairgrounds just prior to the 28th
Annual National Heifer Sale.
The National Heifer Sale, the
highest quality heifer sale in the
nation, will feature 60 heifers
selected on the basis of the highest
pedigree mdexes. Proceeds from
this sale will go toward funding the
youth programs of the American
Jersey Cattle Club.
American Breeders Service will
be hosting a social hour before the
Annual Jersey Breeders Banquet
to be held that evening, at the Host
Resort.
The Young Jersey Dairyman
Award Breakfast and Junior
breakfast will be held on Wed
nesday and will be followed by the
117th Annual Meeting of the
American Jersey Cattle Club.
Throughout the three-day event,
Pennsylvania hospitality will be
displayed through the generosity
of many associated businesses and

“You’d be surprised at how many
people have never been to Penn
sylvania,” commented Jim
Cavanaugh, executive secretary of
the AJCC at a recent meeting.
Pennsylvania has not hosted the
national meeting since 1970 and
Jersey breeders and sponsors of
the event are anxious to show off
their state to the hundreds of
visitors.
Co-chairman for the event are
Dr. and Mrs. Robert C. Dreisbach,
R 3, Hamburg, and Don and Angie
Koontz, Fredonia. Also preparing
for the visiting dairymen are
David and Donna Reusing, who are
putting together a “welcome bag”
of Pennsylvania products to give
each visitor.
Jersey breeders are encouraged
to register early for this meeting.

Hog and pig
inventories
down slightly
in March
HARRISBURG Inventory of
all hogs and pigs on March 1,1965
in the ten states conducting
quarterly hog surveys is estimated
at 39.5 million head, one percent
below last March, according to the
Pennsylvania Crop and Livestock
Reporting Service.
This year’s figure is also six
percent below March 1983 and is
the lowest March inventory since
1976. The ten quarterly states are
Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, lowa,
Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri,
Nebraska, North Carolina and
Ohio.
Breeding inventory at 5.22
million head is four percent less
than a year ago and 13 percent less
than March 1983. This is the lowest
March breeding herd since 1973
when estimates for these com
parable ten states became
available. Market hog inventory,
at 34.3 million head, is one percent
below last year and five percent
below two years ago.
The December 1984-February
1985 pig crop was 14.5 million head,
two percent more than last year
but nine percent below two years
ago. There were 1.94 million sows
that farrowed during the past
quarter, a decrease of one percent
from a year ago and ten percent
below the same period of two years
ago.
Sows farrowing averaged 7.51
pigs per litter compared with 7.27
last year and 7.45 two years ago.
The litter rate is the highest on
record for a December-February
quarter.
Hog producers in the ten
quarterly states intend to farrow
2.37 million sows during March-
May of this year. This is five
percent less than actual
farrowings during the comparable
period in 1984, and 15 percent less
than two years ago. Farrowing
intentions for June-August are 2.20
million head, three percent below
the same period last year and nine
percent than two years ago.
