Other high herds recognized
were: William R. Yoder, Dawn
Rhein and Family, Kenny Dairy
Farm, and Thomas and Larry
Aaron.
John Judson, Bradford County,
received the type award for the
highest appraised herd. His herd of
21 cows average 84%. A new
Jersey breeder in business since
July, 1984, Judson credits much of
his success to the advice of his
neighbor and Jersey friend, Roy
Watson, Troy. “I always wanted to
farm,” Judson explained.
The Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle
Club Distinguished Service Award
was also presented at the annual
meeting and went to a person that
has been promoting Jerseys
through his family for over 60
years. Howa. 1 Norman received
the Distinguished Service Award
for 1985. Norman raised nine
children as active 4-Hers with
Jerseys. Five boys went on to
receive Keystone Farmer

Degrees, six went on to National 4-
H Congress. Currently eight of his
children have bachelor’s degrees,
and seven have their masters, two
their doctorates. He began a
Jersey family that has actively
shown their Jerseys at the local,
state and national level, and
remains active in community and
church affairs.
Norman’s sons are currently
continuing the Jersey tradition on
the Normandell farm and his
grandchildren continue to show
their Jerseys.
“We’re real proud of these
juniors,” Lori Sollenberger, youth
chairman, commented before she
handed out the junior awards.
Through the state junior
organization, Pennsylvania Jer
seys are being recognized
throughout the nation as they win
at state and national levels.
The outstanding FFA junior is
Marlin Deaven, Newburg. He
received the Fetterhof trophy.
Brian Koontz, Fredonia, received
the Brunges trophy for the highest
producing cow in the production
contest. Other winners were:

"We have fallen behind a little
bit,” he warns breeders. “The
young sire sampling in the Jersey
breed has been falling.” En
couraging dairymen to select the

herds, Koontz stated that the
directors are currently working or
more ways to get more young bulls
