Heagy wins double championship
at Lebanon Winter Roundup

LEBANON - While most
families were enjoying a few days
of relaxation following the
Christmas holiday, members and
leaders of the Lebanon County 4-H
Livestock Club conducted their
Winter Rqundup, Dec. 27-28 at the
Lebanon Fairgrounds.
This annual event includes the
selection of animals for the Farm
Show as well as the usual show and
sale.
Shelby Heagy of Lebanon
collected a double championship at
this year’s event. Shelby exhibited
the grand champion market hog.
Her 250-pound crossbred was bred
by her grandfather, Leon Arnold.
A three-quarters Duroc, this ex
tremely long, meaty pig was out of
a Fort Lexington dam and a Motor
sire. Valley Food Markets, Inc., of
Cleona paid a record-breaking
$4-90 a pound for the champion
market hog.
Shelby’s second championship
was claimed in steer competition.
The 1252-pound Simmental-Angus
cross was also bred by Leon Ar
nold. Dutchway Farm Market
purchased the heavily-muscled
champion for $.95 a pound.
Two brothers claimed reserve
champion honors at the Winter
Roundup. Rodney Bomgardner
exhibited the reserve champion
market hog. This 238-pound
Hampshire-Yorkshire was bred by
the Bomgardner family of Ann
ville. People’s National Bank of
Lebanon purchased the winner for
82.10 a pound.
Jeffrey Bomgardner took home
the reserve champion award in
steer competition. Jeff’s Chianina-
Hereford cross was purchased
from Mike McKinney of West
Virginia. Jeff sold his steer for $.90
per pound to Lebanon Valley
National Bank.
The sale totaled gross receipts of
$16,509 with averages of $.90 on the
hogs and $.84 on steers.
Judges for the event were Henry
Gruber for swine and Ken
Winebark placing steers. Henry
commented on the quality of the
hogs exhibited. Although several
hogs were in the heavyweight
division, none were carrying ex
cess finish. “The members,
leaders, and parents are to be
complemented. The hogs shown
here were some of the leanest I
have seen throughout the fall.
Fitting and showing competition
was also held as part of the
Roundup. Beef winners were:

Bryan Eberly. Winners in the hog

The grand champion steer of the Winter Roundup was
shown by Shelby Heagy of Lebanon. It was purchased by
Lebanon Valley National Bank purchased the reserve
champion steer shown by Jeff Bomgardner of Annville.

Shelby Heagy claimed her second championship with a
Duroc cross pig. This extremely long market hog brought a
record-breaking $4.90 a pound from Valley Food Markets,
Inc. of Cleona, represented by Dave A. Peffley, Vice
President.
Rodney Bomgardner of Annville exhibited the reserve
champion market hog. This home-bred pig brought $2.10 a
pound from People’s National Bank of Lebanon. People’s was
represented by Joseph Kreider (left) and Harold Bucher
(center).
