A22-Lmcast*r Farming, Saturday, January 5,1985 Lancaster Co. to get grant (or waste disposal plan LANCASTER - Environmental Resources Secretary Nicholas Deßenedictis has announced the award of a |65,675 state grant to the Lancaster County Com missioners to develop a long-term strategy for solid waste disposal, including an evaluation of recycling and resource recovery options to landfill disposal. Deßenedictis said the grant, to be awarded in fiscal year 1985, will be used to update the county’s current solid waste management plan. “Lancaster County has wit nessed neighboring southeastern Pennsylvania counties scramble for disposal space in the face of a pending trash crisis, and this grant will allow the county to plan for its future disposal needs,’’ said Deßenedictis. “The alternatives to landfills, such as resource recovery and recycling, are im portant elements of a solid waste strategy and will not be overlooked during this study ” Bid calling contest, fun auction hosted by Auctioneers Assoc. The Fifth Annual Pennsylvania Championship Bid Calling Contest will be held on January 10 at 7 p.m. at the Convention Center. Auc tioneers from all across Penn sylvania will compete for a $2OO first prize and will sell a wide variety of new tools and ac cessories as well as other items. A fun auction will be held on Friday, January 11, at 7 p.m., also at the Convention Center, with auctioneers selling donated items such as antiques, jewelry, new merchandise, and more. Jacobson, professor of agricultural , M erK » V M.W.AF. 10-0 TAT. 10 * Lancaster County will analyze the amount and makeup of solid waste generated in the county and evaluate the feasibility of waste-to energy systems and municipal recycling. The solid waste plan ning program is authorized by the Solid Waste Management Act of 1980, and grants are matched by the recepient conducting the study. Over the last decade, DER has closed approximately 800 of Pennsylvania’s 1,100 disposal facilities for improper operation or lack of permits, and many of the remaining landfills are now reaching capacity. “The Commonwealth generates more than 9 million tons of trash each year, and we are running out of places to put it,” said Deßenedictis. “We need the help of all 11 million Pennsylvanians and their elected officials who produce that garbage to do their part in cooperating to dispose of our trash crisis.” Association. All proceeds from the two auctions will benefit the non profit auctioneers association. These two events are part of the annual state auctioneers association convention with regularly draws over 300 par ticipants. Activities of this 3-day convention include seminars, panel discussions, exhibitors, and business meetings. The judges for the championship bid calling contest will include U.S. Representative Robert S. Walker; National Auctioneer Association President Sammy Ford; Joel Sater, an auctioneer and antiques expert from Marietta; and Robert H. Clinton, an auctioneer from Langhome. Over 50 auctioneer contestants in the bid calling contest will be judged on appearance, salesmanship, microphone ability, and “chant.” economics at The Ohio State University, Columbus.
