Alfalfa Pest
Management
Program
Planned in Del.
NEWARK, Del. - Starting next
spring, the University of Delaware
Cooperative Extension Service will
conduct an alfalfa pest
management program for local
producers.
“If you spend a lot of time
making major alfalfa
management decisions, or if other
time demands keep you from 1
regularly scouting your alfalfa
fields, this structured program
may be for you,” says extension
pest management specialist
Joanne Whalen.
Persons who want go learn more
about the program may attend an
alfalfa pest management meeting
from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Jan. 8 at
the Clayton (Del.) Fire Hall. The
meeting and following lunch are
being cosponsored by local
agribusiness firms and the
Delaware Cooperative Extension
Service.
Since alfalfa producers face a
wide range of crop pests and
cultural problems, the new
program in the spring will deal
with all aspects of alfalfa
production. Scouting will start in
early March with a weed survey
and evaluation of overwintering
alfalfa weevil populations. This
early-season evaluation will be
ussed to make weed control
recommendations and help
product potential weevil damage.
Weekly scouting for insect,
weed, disease and cultural
problems will begin in April and
continue through September.
Growers will receive scouting
reports the day fields are checked.
Some examples of the in
formation that will be provided at
appropriate times during the
growing season include:
- Plant population counts;
-Variety selection and
establishment;
-Identification of fertility
problems;
-Insect, weed and disease in
festation levels and control
guidelines;
-Cutting schedules,
Growers wishing to participate
will be asked to pay $3 per acre to
supplement program costs.
