Oklahoma free
of bovine TB
WASHINGTON, D.C.
- The U.S. Department
of Agriculture has
recognized Oklahoma
as the 26th state to
eradicate bovine
tuberculosis.
Bert W. Hawkins,
administrator of
USDA’s Animal and
Plant Health Inspection
Service, is recognizing
the achievement today
by presenting a special
certificate at the 32nd
annual cattlemen’s
convention and trade
show in Oklahoma City.
The certificate was
presented jointly to
Oklahoma Com
missioner of
Agriculture Jack Craig
and Dave Miller,
president of the
Oklahoma Cattlemen’s
Association.
“We’ve now
eradicated this disease
in more than half the
states,” Hawkins noted.
“It’s been a major
undertaking to tackle an
insidious disease like
bovine TB in a state
with 66,000 herds,”
Hawkins said. “It’s not
easy to test range herds
that may be assembled
only twice a year-or to
quarantine them when
infection is found.”
Hawkins praised the

“careful direction from
the top, the alertness of
slaughter plant in
spectors, the keen effort
by laboratory workers,
and the good solid field
work in tracing the
disease.”
He noted that
Oklahoma’s last in
fected herd was
eliminated in March
1979. To qualify as “TB
free,” a state must
remain free of infection
for at least five years. In
addition, it must con
duct a strong sur
veillance program and
enforce a livestock
dealer law that enables
animal health officials
to trace infection to
source herds.
In addition to
Oklahoma, bovine TB
has also been
eradicated in Arizona,
Colorado, Connecticut,
Delaware, Maine,
Maryland, Massachus
etts, Michigan, Min
nesota, Montana,
Nebraska, Nevada, New
Hampshire, New Jer
sey, New Mexico, New
York, North Carolina,
