C2-Lancastor Fanning, Satorday, Dacambar 1,1984 Cohimbia DHIA cites Jurbala BLOOMSBURG - Leading the Columbia County DHIA for the recently completed testing year was the herd of Frank and Jan Jurbala of Orangeville. Their fifty cow herd of registered Holsteins averaged 21,654 pounds of milk and 822 pounds of butterfat. Following the Jurbala herd was Richard Kriebel, Benton, who averaged 774 pounds of butterfat and 20,336 pounds of milk on the 47 cow herd of registered and grade Holsteins. And the Schultz Brothers herd, Bloomsburg, had 18,493 pounds of milk and 764 pounds of butterfat from 70 registered Holsteins. There were 60 members and friends attending the annual meeting on Nov. 17, where recognition was given to high herd averages and herds with out standing increases in production. William Blissinger, Bloomsburg, posted an increase of 2559 pounds of milk and 104 pounds of butterfat over the previous year on his herd of 36 Holsteins. There were five herds with over 700 pounds of butterfat and fourteen more herds that exceeded 600 pounds of but terfat. Robert Bronson, Bloom sburg, received an award for having the lowest average somatic cell count for the year. Columbia County’s DHIA average for 1964 was 15,790 pounds of milk and 605 pounds of butterfat. There were 38 herds that com- pleted the year with 2325 cows on test. Top lifetime producers in the county were: “Milly”, a 12-year old Holstein at Pen-Col Farms with 233,682 pounds of milk and 8431 pounds of butterfat in nine lac tations; “Vallie”, a 12-year-old Guernsey in the Albert Hack herd of Berwick, with an eight lactation total record of 109,472 pounds of milk and 5,306 pounds of butterfat. These cows are still producing and adding to their life-time records. Other herds with distinguished life-time records were: Fred J. Hess, Benton; Shultz Brothers, Bloomsburg; Jack W. Plaisted, who specializes in potato breeding, has been elected an honorary life member of the Potato Association of America (PAA) for his “many ac complishments and contributions” to the nation’s potato industry. PAA also cited Plaisted for his meritorious service to the organization. He is one of four scientists so honored this year at the PAA’s 68th annual meeting of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. In 1971-72, Plaisted served as president of the group, which has more than 1,700 members in the United States and 80 other coun tries. Plaisted is a professor of plant breeding in the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell. He served as chairman of Cornell’s department of plant breeding and biometry from 1964 to 1979. Plaisted is on a team of Cornell scientists that has developed several new potato varieties in cluding “Bake-King,” a baking variety of exceptional culinary quality, and “Rosa” and “Hud son” that have built-in resistance to the golden nematode, an im portant potato pest in New York State.
