820-Uncast«r Farming, Saturday, December 1,1984 Pa. youth win scholarships at National 4-H Congress CHICAGO, 111., Three Penn sylvania teens received national 4- H scholarships during the 63rd National 4-H Congress held in Chicago this week. Karen Leigh Bradshaw of Telford, was named one of six winners of national 4-H dairy goat scholarships. She received a 11,000 scholarship from the American Dairy Goat Association and Liberty Press, Inc. Bradshaw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J.Bradshaw, plans to attend college and major in nutrition and dietetics. “I chose to major in nutrition and dietetics because of my in terest in biology and home economics,” she said. “The effect of food on the human body has become an important part of American life today.” A 4-H’er in Montgomery County, Bradshaw was a four-time winner in county 4-H fashion revue competition and took part in state competition. She won the dairy goat award and was president of a 4-H dairy goat group. Her other major 4-H projects include leadership, sewing, sheep and dog care and training. In high school, Bradshaw was a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Govern ment Association. She earned letters in cross county and field hockey. She also played rugby and was a member of the International Friendship Club. Bradshaw also was a member of a clowning group that visited hospitals and nursing homes to cheer up residents. She and the other clowns raised $1,500 for the Sunshine Foundation, which helps terminally ill children. Her hobbies include sewing, running, tennis, swimming, volleyball, gardening, raising animals and photography. Kimberly Alane Bradshaw, Telford, received a national 4-H animal science scholarship. This 19-year-old coed was one of two young people to be presented with a $l,OOO scholarship by Wayne Feed Division, Continental Grain Company. The scholarships are awarded annually to present or former 4- H’ers who are college juniors majoring in animal science. Bradshaw, daughter of Mr. and Mr. William Bradshaw, attends Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture in Doylestown, Pa. “I chose animal science because this field would be most rewarding to me,” said Bradshaw. “I have been very active in the various 4-H animals groups and this has turned Mike Marks tops Wayne Co. 4-H Capon Roundup HONESDALE - Mike Marks, El Damascus and a member of the Windy Hill 4-H Club, had the grand champion exhibit of capons at the recent Wayne County 4-H Capon Round-up. Mike’s two dressed capons weighed 8 3/4 and 9 pounds and received a scored of 18.5 points out of a possible 20 points from Doyle Thomas, Susquehanna County extension director and judge of the Wayne County 4-H Capon Round-up. Keith Hauenstein, from Aldenville, a member of the Aldenville Adventurers 4-H Club, had the reserve grand champion exhibit of capons. Keith’s two dressed 4-H capons weighed 8 3/4 and 9 pounds and received a score of 18 out of a possible 20 points. Beginner’s Division Reserve Champion JSM is Karen Bradshaw my love tor animals into a life-time career.” Bradshaw has been taking extra courses at college to become certified as a laboratory animal technologist. “I would like to become as knowledgeable in the field of animal science as I can,” she says. “It will give me more versatility in the agriculture and agri-business fieeld.” An 11-year 4-H’er in Mon tgomery County, her major projects included dairy goats, sheep, clothing, knitting and crocheting. She was the county clothing winner three times and took part in regional competition. She also was named reserve grand champion of sheep fitting and showmanship at the county 4-H fair. She served as president of a 4- H dairy goat group. In both high school and college, she has been active in running, softball and other sports, her hobbies include playing piano and guitar. David C. Antram was named one of eight national winners in the 4-H automotive program, he received a $l,OOO scholarship from The Firestone Trust Fund, the program sponsor. Antram, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Antram, is a high school junior who plans a career in history and law. He is a nine-year 4-H’er. The Somerset County youth worked for two years to fully restore a 1953 Kaiser. Kaiser- Frazer automobiles were built in this country between 1947 and 1955 and are becoming collector’s items, he said. These 4-H members managed and fed over 1,600 capons during 1984. These 4-H capons had Kimberly Bradshaw once there the car took its place alongside others. Throughout the week, people stopped to look it over and ask questions.” The car placed fourth in competition. “By checking ads and rumors, writing as many as 10 to 15 letters a month, and tracking down all leads, I’ve located close to 60 cars and many parts,” Antram said. One of the most desirable Kaiser-Frazer models is the Darrin, a fiberglass sports car that was produced at about the same time as the first Chevrolet Cor vette. “Only 370 of these cars can be accounted for today, which doesn’t leave many out there to find,” said Antram. “I was able to locate one. It was in rough shape after sitting outside a number of years and having careless owners.” Antram currently is restoring three other Kaisers in addition to the Darrin. Antram also has been active in community service projects. He serves as cochairman of his county’s K.I.S.S. (Kids is Safety Seats) program. He has travelled the state giving talks to adult and youth groups about child restraint laws. a dressed meat production potential of over six tons of dressed capon meat. The Wayne County 4-H Capon Round-up was sponsored by the Honesdale Rotary Club. The Honesdale Rotary Club also sponsored and supported the 4-H Capon Auction which was con ducted by Jack Bunnell, Honesdale.
