Sally Shelter shows lop capon at Adams Co. roundup
GETTYSBURG The Cashtown
lions Club again hosted a record
setting 4-H Capon Round-up. An
average price of $5.70 per pound
sets a record price for 4-H Capons
in Adams County.
The grand champion was
exhibited by Sally Shelter, Get
tysburg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Edward Shelter. Sally is a first
year capon project member. Her 9
3/4-pound capon was purchased by
Sheriff Bernard Miller for $28.50
per pohnd.
The reserve champion capon
was exhibited by Jenny Shelter
also of Gettysburg. Her 10 pound
capon was purchased also by the
sheriff for $lO a pound.
John Bream, chaiman for this
year’s show and sale, reported five
Adams County 4-H’ers par
ticipated in the Nineteenth 4-H
Capon Round-up sponsored by the
Cashtown Lions Club, the Adams
County Poultry Association and
the Adams County Cooperative
Extension Service. Twenty capons
weighing a total of 188 pounds were

the profit received by these junior
executives from this 4-H Capon
business is used as operating
capital for next year’s 4-H capon
project and serves to help meet
future educational expenses.
The members were judged on
the Danish system by Dr. Paul
Aho, poultry science department,
Penn State University. Ilie capons
were evaluated on conformation,
freedom from pin feathers, cuts,
tears, and bruises packaging and
dressing procedure. Members
receiving blue merit ribbons for
exhibiting superior quality capons
were: Sally Shelter, Jenny Shelter,
and Ken Shelter. Jack! King and
Melinda Keller received red and
white ribbons respectively.

The Adams County Poultry
Association bought the trophies
that were presented to the
Champions and also purchased two
capons to be donated to Green
Acres for Thanksgiving.
The Gettysburg National Bank
also purchased a capon and
donated it to Green Acres.
Other buyers included: Gerald
Keller, Biesecker Plumbing, At
torney Robert McQuaide, Walter
Griest, Clark Spence, Bucher
Meats, Bream’s Orchard, Charles
Chubb, Frantz Plumbing, and
William Toeller.
Larry Peters, Biglerville, served
as auctioneer for this record sale,
donating his time.
