To crate an eye-catching country
decoration try making a quilted
tree of calico prints cut into
triangles and stuffed with Polyfil.
Triangles are sewn together in
combinations of three, 16, 36, etc.,
to form a quilted tree as big as you
want.
To begin cut a cardboard tem
plate from a triangle pattern given
here. This pattern includes a 1/4-
inch seam allowance around the
entire triangle. If you wish to
enlarge or reduce the size of your
tree’s quilted elements simply
make your adjustments on a grid
being sure to allow for the 1/4 inch
for seams.
Cut 36 triangles using the tem
plate. Arrange all the triangles
into a pleasing color scheme using
rows of 1,3,5,7,9 and 11 triangles.
Sew (leaving a 1/2-inch seam
allowance) the bias edge of one
triangle (base side down) to the
bais edge of the next triangle (base
down) until you have the bottom
row of 11 triangles completed.
Repeat this procedure until you
have completed a row of 9,7, 5, 3
and 1 triangles. Iron each strip,
pressing all seams to one side.
Next, join the short side of the 11-
piece strip to the long side of the 9-

At intervals, tack through all -
layers and add ribbon bows, bits of
tinsel, buttons or miniature
Christmas balls. This is a very
successful fund-raiser project and
easily can be completed as a
“mass production” bazaar item.
Materials for a quilted tree are:
2 pieces of Poly-fil batting
measuring 36 by 25, thread 1 1/2
yards of 3/8-inch-wide ribbon,
cardboard, 3/4 yard of fabric for
back and truck, 18 assorted calico
prints, or 13 each of any given
three fabrics, measuring 7 by 7.
