on the finished product. The nose
also requires fine attention to
detail.
Once the hide is returned to him
he places it on the form, first
soaking it in a Borax solution.
Hides are pliable at this point.
Sewing skills come into play as he
works to complete the actual
mount over the frame.
Asked how he keeps up to date,
Herr cites the “Taxidermy
Review” as a periodical that is
valuable to his work. He also at
tends occasional seminars spon
sored by the Pennsylvania
Taxidermists Association, and
learns by talking to other
taxidermists.
Through the years, Herr has
mounted elk, caribou, moose,
sheep, foxes, bears, turkeys,
pheasants and other game. He
estimates that he does 15-25 deer
heads and 10-12 bears a season.
Although he is an avid fisherman,
he doesn’t mount fish because that
requires different skills.
His favorite mount is the white
tailed deer, because “a trophy
white tailed deer is as smart as
anything.” While he has enjoyed
some really exciting hunts, he says
he still has a goal of finding a true
trophy white tail. “A trophy white
tail with an 18 to 23 - inch rack
would be the ultimate,” Herr
states.
He has hunted once in Canada,
once in New Mexico, and twice in
Idaho, but says he hunts primarily
in Pennsylvania and the neigh
boring states. He says, “Penn
sylvania is an awfully good place
to hunt. We have got a lot of
competition, but there is a lot of
variety.”
Hunting has changed over the
years, primarily with the present
shortage of phasants. Herr at-

tributes the declining numbers to
modern farming methods which
put the farmer in the field with a
haybine in May, often destroying
young pheasants in the process.
He has also found his
taxidermy business changing, with
new products constantly being
created.
Herr has all the business he can
handle, often turning away small
game in preference to white tailed
deer and also because he likes to
return the mounts to their owners
within a reasonable time.
While admitting that it is often
difficult to find the proper place to
display a trophy, Herr solved the
problem by adding a room to his
beautiful stone farm house. The
addition, of matching stone,
features a cathedral ceiling which
offers a perfect setting for the
large moose, elk and bear he has
on display. Many othjer examples
of his skill can be found in the
comfortable family room.
Herr farms with the help of his
wife, Nancy, and two daughters,
Judy, 20, and Susan, 14. A married
son, Robert, 23, lives close .by. He
said he enjoys going out to milk
after spending an afternoon
working at the taxidermy
business, and feels the two jobs
compliment each other. He points
out, “I only work with the
taxidermy in my ‘extra’ time. I try
to devote all the time we feel is
necessary to the cows.”
He adds, “I've been farming all
my life.” He grew up on the same
farm which was worked by his
father, Emory, and his uncle
Clarence. In addition to the dairy
herd, the Herrs had a "butcher shop
and grew persian melons, can
talopes and watermelons. Federal
and state regulations became
oppressive, so they left the but
