A 30—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 10,1984 Farmers and neighbors pledge $12,000 toward bridge FALMOUTH - A group of farmers and neighbors from Lancaster and Dauphin Counties recently pledged $12,000 in per sonal funds to help replace a covered bridge over the Conewago Creek that was 'destroyed by fire six years ago. For the six years since the bridge was destroyed, poultry farmer Clair Nissley of Falmouth has had to travel several miles out of his way to reach fields on the other side of the creek and the egg truck has had to change its route. For Nissley and some of his neighbors the bridge was a vital link between their farms and fields, and although superviors in Conoy and Londonderry Town ships talked about replacing it, no action was ever taken. Nissley said area fanners wrote a letter to the Lancaster County Commissioners .. bout two years ago, requesting that the bridge be rebuilt. About a year and a half ago, Lancaster and Dauphin Counties decided to split the cost of replacing the bridge, but the two townships joined by the bridge were requested to finance the approaches on their respective PDA to enforce Yule tree theft law HARRISBURG The approach of the Christmas holiday season brings many decisions, including the purchase of a live Christmas tree from one of the thousands of tree growers and vendors across the commonwealth. “Unfortunately, legitimate sellers and consumers often face higher prices due to tree thefts and unscrupulous dealers,” said state Agriculture Secretary Penrose Hallowed. “Unfil December of 1983, tree farmers and legitimate dealers had little protection from theft, which may cost the industry $lOO,OOO a year.” The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Resources and law enforcement agencies, are enforcing the act. Conoy Township supervisor Bob Strickland said the engineer’s estimate for the approach on the Conoy side was for $22,800, but the supervisors felt they could afford to appropriate only $5,000 toward the project. At this point, Nissley and a group of his neighbors who wanted the bridge rebuilt got together and pledged $12,000, leaving $5,800 unaccounted for, Nissley said. In a special meeting with supervisors and farmers, the engineering firm lowered its estimate to $17,000 - the total of the money pledged from the township and farmers. “We got them (the engineer) to eliminate some of the items on this job to bring the price down to $17,000,” Strickland said, noting that the items eliminated were not essential to the bridge’s structure. Strickland says he believes the group’s persistence is the reason the bridge is finally being replaced. “They kept the thing Barrow (Continued from Page A2B) Medium Weight 1 RR Petersen & Sons IN 2 Jeff Wippel OH 3 R R Petersen & Sons Heavy Weight 1 Gene Wakeland 4 Family MD 2 Stephen Brown 4 Family IN 3 R R Petersen A Sons Berkshire Champion Gene Wakeland & Family Berkshire Reserve Champion Stephen Brown & Family CHESTER WHITE Lightweight 1 James T Parlett PA 2 James T Parlett Medium Weight 1 James T Parlett 2 James T Parlett Heavyweight 1 James T Parlett 2 James T Parlett Chester White Champion I James T Parlett alive until the two counties decided to build the bridge," he said. Construction of the concrete box frame bridge that will replace the wooden covered bridge which once spanned the creek should start late this year or early next spring, Strickland said. Nissley said he and the other farmers who pledged money for the project hope they will be reimbursed with public money, but Strickland said the township does not intend to reimburse them. Others who contributed funds to the bridge are: Chris Becker, R 4 Elizabethtown; Melvin Nissley, Middletown; Robert Gruber, Middletown; and Glenn Hippie, Elizabethtown.
