MANHATTAN, Kan.
Red flour beetles in
stored grain and grain
products are showing
increasing resistance to
malathion, the most
commonly used in
secticide for stored
grain, a U.S. Depart
ment of Agriculture
scientist reports.
But the scientist,
entomologist Richard
W. Beeman of USDA’s
Agricultural Research
Service, said he had
located the specific gene
in the beetle that resists
malathion.
He said he is locating
genes that resist other
insecticides so that a
strategy can be
developed to reduce the
impact of insecticide
resistance.
The red flour beetle’s
resistance has in
tensified in the past 15
years throughout the
Midwest and Southeast,
he said, while the
highest levels have been
found in Alabama,
Florida and Georgia.
Beeman said new
evidence of the
resistance came from
studies at the research
agency’s U.S. Grain
Marketing Research
Laboratory in
Manhattan, Kans.
He and Jonathan P.
Haliscak, Kansas State
University graduate
research assistant,
found 36 strains of red
