B2o—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 3,1984 ALLENTOWN - Livestock entries from Bucks, Carbon, Lehigh, Montgomery, Nor thampton and Schuylkill Counties vied for top honors at the 44th Eastern Pennsylvania 4-H Beef and Lamb Sale on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Allentown Fairgrounds. Debra Krause of Lehigh County exhibited the . grand champion steer which weighed in at 1,206 pounds. The buyer, Danny George of George’s Foodliner, Bethlehem, paid $3.10 per pound for the champion. Daniel Berghold, Northampton County, showed the reserve grand champion steer weighing 1,180 pounds and was sold for $2.40 per pound. The buyer was Danny George. The champion light weight steer weighing 1,013 pounds sold for $1 per pound and was bought by Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Allentown. The steer was exhibited by Phil McMahon, Montgomery County. Uncaster 4*H dairy winners recognized QUARRYVILLE - The table was heavily laden with awards before the evening program began, and Lancaster County Dairy 4- H’ers hovered around to glimpse a name or two on the engraved trophies. This was their night of recognition for the summer’s ef forts - caring for and showing their dairy projects. Dairy project record winners earned their awards at the Lancaster County 4-H Dairy Banquet Friday, Oct. 26. in the front row, left to right, are: Robbie Fox; Scott Hess, top individual; Cindy Gordon; Judy Rohrer; Janice Garber, runner-up; and Dan Welk. In the back are: Susan Hess; Helen Arrowsmith; Karen Shertzer, and Tom Arrowsmith. Eastern 4-H Beef and reserve champion light weight steer, weighing 1,007 pounds and was purchased by Danny George, forsl per pound. The champion medium weight steer, weighing 1,065 pounds, sold for $1 per pound and was bought by Karl Reichstatder, Lehighton. The steer was exhibited by Dawn Zimmerman, Carbon County. Dwaine Shultz, Northampton County, showed the reserve medium weight champion steer, weighing 1,070 pounds and was purchased by Danny George for $1 per pound. The grand champion individual lamb, weighing 109 pounds, was sold at $3.50 per pound to Danny George. It was owned by Andy Wagner, Northampton County. The grand champion pair of lambs, exhibited by Jon Eric Miller, Northampton County, was pur chased by Danny George. The fair of lambs weighed 202 pounds and sold at $l.BO per pound. Bill Scott, Berks county, showed the reserve grand champion lamb The dairy awards were distributed all-round to the 4-H’ers on Friday, October 26, at the Lancaster County 4-H Dairy Banquet, held at the Solanco Fairgrounds in Quarryville. The Kids and Rows 4-H Dairy Club hosted the evening awards banquet. The reserve grand champion pair of lambs, shown by Andy Wagner, and weighing 206 pounds, was purchased by Danny George for $1.20. The champion light weight lamb was purchased by Wood Food Service, Allentown, for $l.Ol per pound. The lamb weighed 91 pounds and was exhibited by Dwaine Schultz. The Reserve light weight champion lamb, weighing 94 pounds, was sold at 90 cents per pound to Bob Yapsuga, Whitehall. It was owned by Phil McMahon. The reserve medium weight champion lamb, weighing 108 pounds, was sold at $1 per pound to Berks-Lehigh Farm Credit, Fogelsville. It was owned by Steven Wessner, Lehigh County. The reserve heavy weight champion lamb, weighing 127 pounds was sold at $.90 per pound to Barringer Brothers, Richland town. It was owned by Jon Eric Miller. The sale and a show on Friday, their dairy activities throughout the summer, in exhibiting champions in the 4-H shows and in showing and fitting, dairy bowl, and dairy judging contests. In addition, project record winners were announced for the first time on Friday evening. The proud winner of the top project record honors was Scott were conducted by the Agricultural Extension Service, with the county agents of the six counties in charge. The auc tioneers were Peter Krall and Ralph Zettlemoyer. Other buyers at the sale were Easton Hospital, Peters Brothers, James V. Bums, Susan Kaomarik, Chestnut Logs Restaurant, Krause Farms, Wayne’s Dry Goods; Western Auto, D & J Enterprises, Don Moss, Frank Solondge, A 1 Schaedel, and Agway, Inc. Paul Hower, Ontelaunee Lions, Harold Fabian, Herring Brothers, John Scholl, John Aimer, Leslie Urable, William Harris, Tom Cnstman, John Carlson, Peter Krall, Wayne Wessner, Thomas Klucik, Edwin Roberts, Lazarus Farm Market, Heusseman’s Farm Equipment, Charles Bromm, Reality Center, and Donald Theyken were also buyers Average price per pound of the steers with the grand champion included was $1.13 per pound; Without the top two, the average was $l.Ol per pound. Last year’s averages were 89 cents and 76 cents. Rotating trophies for the animal best owned and bred in each breed were presented to: Max Brommer, Ayrshire; Janice Garber, Guernsey; Helen Arrowsmith, Jersey; Diane Hershberger, Holstein; and Cindy Trimble, Brown Swiss. In addition, the winners were presented with permanent trophies sponsored by Lancaster Farming. Hess. Runners-up in the com petition, which is based on the record books for their dairy projects submitted by the 4-H’ers, were Janice Garber and Steve Hershey. Other project record winners were Helen Arrowsmith, Susan Hess, Connne Hershey, Cindy Gordon, Robbie Fox, Dan Welk, Karen Shertzer, Judy Rohrer, and Tom Arrowsmith. This year’s recipients of the rotating memorial trophies for best animal owned and bred were: Diane Hershberger, Holstein; Janice Garber, Guernsey; Max Brommer, Ayrshire; Helen Arrowsmith, Jersey; and Cindy Trimble, Brown Swiss. “Lancaster Farming” sponsored permanent Average price per pound for the lambs with the grand champion included was $1.06; without the top four, the average was 98 cents per pound. Last year’s averages were 79 cents and 74 cents. The total sales of the 22 steers in the sale were $28,372.73. The total sales of the 74 lambs in the sale were $8,304.66. BEEF The Light Weight beef class included steers which weighed 936- 1013 pounds. 1. Phil McMahon - Green Lane, Montgomery County - Light Weight Champion; 2. Margret Shultz - Collegeville, Montgomery County - Reserve Light Weight Champion; 3. Conrad Fisher - Green Lane, Montgomery County. The Medium Weight beef class included steers which weighed 1031 -1070 pounds. 1. Dawn Zimmerman Weissport, Carbon County - Medium Weight Champion; 2. Two dairy teams were honored for their summer competitions. The Lancaster County judging team members, who placed fourth in the state judging contest, were recognized and thanked by coaches Gary Akers and Peter Witmer. Team members were Bob Barley, Darrel Mills, Don Welk, and Karen Shertzer. Another team effort was made this summer by the dairy bowl contestants.
