Grange reports
talent contest
winners
GETTYSBURY - About 800
Grange members filled the Get
tysburg Junior High School
auditorium last week for the an
nual State Grange Talent Contest.
The competition was conducted
during the annual convention of the
State Grange in Gettysburg.
Contestants in the talent contest
were first place winners in district
eliminations in six categories of
competition: vocal, instrumental,
variety, family vocal, family in
strumental and family variety.
Overall best of show in the in
dividual category, the top in
dividual award, was presented to
Jennie Carter, a member of
Meadville Grange in Crawford
County. Carter was the first place
winner in the vocal category for a
combination piano-vocal
presentation. The Straub family
from Stony Point Grange, Mercer
County, won best of show in the
family category and first place in
family variety. The ensemble,
made up of Virginia Straub and her
two sons, Joel and Christopher,
entertained audiences with a
comedy routine.
Runner-up best of show awards
went to Ann Marie VanSteenburg
and Sue Hansel of Sigel Grange,
Jefferson County, in talent, and to
the John Nesbit Family from Plum
Creek Valley Grange in Indiana
County.
Best of shows will represent the
State Grange in national com
petition in November in Portland,
Maine. Runners-up will fill in for
the best of shows in the event that
they cannot attend the national
contest.
