    U. of Md. heads Caribbean ag project
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The
University of Maryland at College
Park has been awarded the lead
campus role in .a four-year, $2
million Caribbean technical
assistance program for small
farmers in the West Indies.
Funding is being provided by the
Agency for International
Development in the U.S. Depart
ment of State.'
Improving income and living
conditions for small-farm families
in nine tiny Windward and
Leeward island nations through
increased employment and
agricultural production is a major
project goal, according to John R.
Moore, assistant provost for in
HARRISBURG - The Penn
sylvania Crop and Livestock
Reporting Service soon begins its
annual survey to measure wheat
prospects and livestock numbers
in the state. This data will be
valuable to Pennsylvania farmers
as they decide whether to enroll in
the 1985 wheat program and
evaluate anticipated changes in
other farming operations.
According to Wally Evans, chief
statisian of the PCLRS, a small
sample of farmers in Pennsylvania
and in states across the county has
been selected and will be contacted
during late November or early
December to help with this major
survey effort.
Evaluation of the dairy diversion
program, which was implemented
to reduce milk surpluses, and
many other programs depend
greatly on data gathered during

faculty member assisting Moore in
the Office of International
Programs. Rowntree will be home
campus coordinator and serve as
the project’s technical director.
Marcus D. Ingle, an agricultural
and life sciences research
associate and coordinator for the
university’s International
Development Management
Center, will be a management
consultant.
Other University of Maryland
Wheat, livestock survey to begin
the 1985 Farm Bill will also rely on
results from this survey.
Survey results will be available
on December 20, 1984 for wheat
and hogs; on December 21 for
poultry; on January 25, 1985 for
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A number

New Jersey will be participating in
various activities at next week’s
national convention in Kansas
City, Mo.

director of the Caribbean
Agricultural Research and

Grenadines, St. Lucia, Dominica,
Antigua, St. Christopher-Nevis,
Montserrat and Grenada. Bar
bados will be a participant in
certain crop and livestock
programs. All are English
speaking former British or French
territories.
The project is intended to help
the Caribbean Agricultural
Research and Development In
stitute establish an effective
farming systems program which
will be responsive to the needs of
small commercial farms and aid in
their growth. Technical assistance
will help to generate agricultural
technology, provide extension
educational services to small
farmers, and strengthen the in-

project is the South-East Con
sortium for International
Development, a nonprofit group of
34 academic and research
organization *n southern and

are representatives from Clemson
University, Virginia Tech,
Southern University and Winrock
International.
