Walker’s office while attending the Future Farmers of America’s annual community development con ference for state Achievement in Volunteensm winners in Washington, D.C. Krall was named the Pennsylvania winner during the state FFA convention this summer for contributions to his chapter’s Building Our American Communities (BOAC) project. Perry Valley Grange wins contest HARRISBURG - Perry Valley Grange, located in Millerstown, Perry County, took top honors in the State Grange Community Service Contest. The 150-member local Grange was selected by the Delaware State Grange, contest judges, on the basis of 18 projects conducted during the 1983-84 year to benefit their local community. According to Douglas Bonsall, State Grange Lecturer (program director), 80 local granges entered the 1984 contest, representing many thousands of hours of volunteer work to improve local communities in rural areas. Perry Valley Grange estimated their man hours at 8,000. Placing second through fourth places, respectively, were Pleasant Hill Grange, Chest Springs, Cambria County; Kutz town Grange, Kutztown, Berks County; and Hookstown Grange, Hookstown, Beaver County. Perry Valley Grange impressed the judges with the quantity and creativity of their many projects. One of the most active granges in the state, Perry Valley won last year’s state and national contests, and was a second place winner in 1982. The grange’s major emphasis has been in projects to benefit deaf causes. Eight-week sign language courses are conducted for the community three times a year and average 35 participants per class. BOAC is a community development program. Chapters meet with community leader and identify local needs. The chapter than initiates one or more projects targeting those needs. As a state winner, Krall received a plaque and a $2OO check for his chapter from BOAC program sponsor, R J. Reynolds Industries, Inc. of Winston-Salem, N.C. While in Washington, Krall and his FFA Advisor Harold provide interest-free loans to deaf persons to purchase TTY devices for their telephones, and the Grange Hall is opened free of charge for deaf socials on a monthly basis. One of the more innovative projects conducted by the Grange was a Christmas cookie exchange where com munity residents traded home baked cookies with some of the treats presented to shut-ins. In addition, the grange raised over $3400 for various causes. A $2OO U.S. Savings Bond will be presented to Perry Valley representatives during the State Grange convention in Gettysburg next week.
