Swasey named Long wood coordinator
James E. Swasey has
been named coordinator
of the Longwood
Graduate Program in
Ornamental Hor
ticulture at the
University of Delaware.
The program, a
cooperative effort of the
university’s College of
Agricultural Sciences
and Longwood Gardens,
leads to a master’s
degree in ornamental
horticulture, with
special emphasis on the
management and ad
ministration of public
gardens.
Among the graduates
of the unique two-year
program are directors
and coordinators of
many of the nation’s
leading public gardens,
including the education
coordinator of the Los
Angeles State and
County Arboretum,
David 0. Lofgren; the
director of horticulture
of the Smithsonian
Institution in
Washington, D.C.,
James R. Buckler; and
the new director of
Longwood Gardens,
Frederick E. Roberts.
According to Dean
Donald F. Crossan of
the University of
Delaware’s College of
Agricultural Sciences,
Swasey’s education and
experience make him
singularly well qualified
to lead the Longwood
Program. Swasey holds
a B.S. in horticulture
from the University of
New Hampshire, and an
M.S. and Ph.D. in or
namental horticulture
from the University of
Maryland.
In 1971 Swasey joined
the plant science faculty
at the University of
Maine at Orono, serving
also as that university’s
landscape designer. He
went on to chair Maine’s
department of plant and
soil sciences.
Swasey took a sab
batical leave from the
University of Maine
during the 1978-79
academic year. He
spent that year filling in
for a faculty member at
another university, who
was also away on a
sabbatical. The faculty
member was Dr.
Richard Lighty, then
the coordinator fo the
Longwood Graduate
Program at the
University of Delaware.
Thus, when Lighty
resigned this year,
Swasey was the only
candidate who could
claim a year’s ex
perience as acting
coordinator of the
Longwood Program.
Swasey’s first official
act as Longwood
coordinator has been to
Lamb workshops begin
10. Sponsored by the Penn State
University and the Appalachian
Regional Commission, the two-day
workshops are designed to un
prove individual proficiency in live
lamb and lamb carcass evaluation.
They will also update producers'
and allied industry leaders' un
derstanding of the regional
standardized lamb grading
program now being implemented
by major lamb producing state in
the northeast and introduce
undertake an evaluation
of the program to assess
the need for future
changes. To that end, he
has contacted current
and former students,
their employers, and
others in the field.
The response has been
overwhelmingly positi
ve all around. Former
students were par
ticularly enthusiastic in
their praise of the
program’s flexibility.
Each Longwood Fellow
can delve into his or her
own subspecialty of
horticultural manage
ment by choosing ap
propriate elective
subjects and internship
experiences at
Longwood Gardens.
