New plant varieties protected WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued certificates of protection for 10 new varieties of barley, beans, creeping red fescue, muskmelons, peas, perennial ryegrasses and soybeans. The newly protected barley variety is Bumper, developed by Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc., St. Louis, Mo. The bean variety protected is Snowball, developed by Wilbur- Ellis Company Seed Division, Spokane, Wash. The creeping red fescue variety protected is Jupiter, developed by W.W. Johnson and Son Ltd., Lincolnshire, England. The newly protected muskmelon is Top Net SR, developed by Moran Seeds, Inc., Salinas, Calif.; and the new pea variety is Stampede, developed by Asgrow Seed Company, Kalamazoo, Mich. Newly protected perennial ryegrass varieties are Premier, developed by Agriculture Service Corporation, Salem, NEED MORE ROOM? USDA is reissuing five certificates of protec tion. They include a com variety developed by Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Johnston, lowa, which is being reissued to show a change in variety name from AD3B to G 39. Four safflower varieties are being reissued to show a change in the owner’s name. They are S-317,8- 400,8-742 and S-541, with the owner’s name changing from Pacific Oilseeds Incorporated to SeedTec In ternational, Inc., Woodland, Calif. Bumper barley, Snowball bean, Jupiter creeping red fescue and BSR 201 soybean will be sold by variety name only as a class of cer tified seed limited to three generations of production beyond breeder seed.
