B2o—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 29,1984 BY ROBIN PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent HARRISBURG - It was showtime in Harrisburg this past week. Over 700 youths from across Pennsylvania gathered for the 29th Annual Pennsylvania Junior Dairy Show at the Farm Show Building in Harrisburg on Monday. Competition was sharp as juniors vied for top honors in the state and a chance at competing in the national shows held later in the week. Type judges Ronald Long, sire analyst with Select Sires, Plain City, Ohio, and Peter Spike, ex tension dairy specialist, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, selected their champions in the six major dairy breeds including a FFA Holstein show and a 4-H Holstein show. The main arena was divided into two rings which featured the top dairy entries in a show that lasted until 5 p.m. When the dust settled on the last show of the day, it was no surprise to see the winning senior two year old of Justin Doeberiener, Jamestown, Crawford County, in the winners circle again. Taking the grand champion title of the 4-H Holstein Show, C Houdale Temple Rachel, dazzled the judges with her strength and style. As for 14-year-old Justin, he was all smiles as he admitted that 1984 was his best year in his five year 4-H career. “Rachel”, according to Justin, made up in this year for her lack of wins as a heifer. Stating that he was glad that his father, Ed Doebriener, changed his mind about selling her as a heifer, Justin now looks forward to traveling to larger shows with her and facing more competition. The two boys were competing for first place throughout the class when Judge Long finally appointed Oakes as the winner. “Those two are in competition all the time,’’ said a laughing Mrs. Oakes after the class. “They’re always back and forth. What makes us feel good,” she ex plained, “is that it’s out of our homebred bull.” (Vel-Rus Royal Star Jason-twin.)
