4-H' ers BY BARBARA RADER MUTUAL The Southwest District 4-H Horse Show was held at the Westmoreland County Fairgrounds, Mutual, on Sept. 8 and 9. With well over 260 participants from the five county area of Arm strong, Butler, Fayette, Indiana and Westmoreland, competition was tough among the 4-H’ers competing for the opportunity to attend the State Horse Show in Harrisburg on Oct. 5 to 7. Leading the way was Butler County with 11 blue ribbon winners and 19 4-H’ers headed for the state show. Westmoreland pulled in seven blue ribbons with 22 youngsters state bound. Nine blues were tallied up for Indiana County, with 10 more seeking honors to continue to states. Armstrong and Fayette Counties tied with three blues each. Armstrong will have four other participants in the state competition and Fayette will have a dozen more. Marc Gellart from Findlay College, Findlay, Ohio, served as the Western judge for Saturday’s competiton and Laddie G. An dahazy, Novelty, Ohio, judged the English on Sunday. Leaders and county agents representing each county in the district participants on the show committee and served as English and Western stewards. Jack Leonard and Associates, veterinarian; Hick Baker and Dan Sort, farriers, and Bell Powers, official photographer, were also on hand to offer their services. Entertainment was provided by the Westmoreland County 4-H Drill Team, who demonstrated their talents by riding to music. The 4-H Horse leaders sponsored a dance on Saturday evening. First and second place winners in each class are eligible for state competition. The top three winners in pole bending - horse, barrel race-horse, Western riding, hunter under saddle - horse, four comer stake - horse, pleasure pairs and stock seat equitation - senior, are eiligible for state competition. Fourth place winners in grooming and showmanship - senior, open trail - horse, stock seat equitation • junior, grooming and showmanship - junior, western pleasure - horse, are eligible for the state show. Fee at the gate is $3. Sponsored by the Hunterdon County Cooperative Extension Service, the Home Energy Con servation Series will discuss energy topics including wood and coal burning stoves, simple maintenance of home heating systems, indoor air pollution, window treatments and land scaping for energy conservation. The series will run on four consecutive Thursdays, starting on Oct. 11.
