unique architectural
form and its place in
19th century rural
America will open this
week at the National
Agricultural Library
Building in Beltsville,
Md.
Called “The German
Housebarn in America:
Object and Image,” the
exhibit focuses on the
Pelster housebarn in
Franklin County, Mo.,
one of perhaps two
dozen such structures
surviving in the United
States. Built m the
1860’s, this multi-leveled
bam was designed to

members, farm animals
and agricultural
products under one roof.

to 4:30 p.m., except
weekends and holidays,
through Nov. 30.
The library will also
exhibit a collection of
rare books and artifacts
on early German
agricultural practices.
Through photos,
artifacts and descrip
tive narrative, the
exhibit explores the
history of the housebarn
as it reflects the life and
cultural landscape of
the Missouri-German
immigrant experience.
A reconstructed portion
and model of the
original structure are
displayed along with
farm and home im
plements depicting
agricultural practices of
the time, family history
and community life.
The National
Agricultural Library is
located at the in
tersection of U.S. Rt. 1
and Interstate Rt. 95
(Beltway Exit 25A-
North), Beltsville, Md.,
15 miles north of
Washington, D.C.
Visitor parking is ac
cessible from either
Route 1 or from Rhode
Island Avenue. Bus
