Tim, 17, and Mike, 19, Pfautz, of
Stevens, have been around Lan
caster County swine show rings for
quite a few years despite their
young ages. They are known there
almost as much as they are at
functions and events of fellow Blue
and Gold jacketed FFA‘ers.
But Tuesday night was a first for
them - a grand championship at
the Ephrata Fair. The best before
that had been a tno of reserve
grands at the fair and roundups in
about a decade of showing.
And, in the grand champion’s
circle was not their customary
reddish-hued hog but a Spotted
one.

EPHRATA What’s the lamb
and sheep capitol of Lancaster
County?
You’ll get a lot of opinions on that
depending on who you talk to.
But at the Ephrata Fair Wed
nesday night, East Earl - rural
hamlet in the eastern section of the
county - emerged with that
possible designation.
The top winners in both the new
sheep breeding show and the
traditional market lamb show at
the fair hailed from East Earl.
Breeding sheep grand champion
with his yearling Suffolk ewe was
11-year-old Doug Martin, youngest
of four children of Mr. and Mrs.
John A. Martin, East Earl, who
have been showing Suffolks out of
the family flock for quite a few
years.
Daughter Debbie, now maried,
even returned to help out with this
year’s show string. While Doug
and Jeff, 13, were showing at
Ephrata, older brother Barry was
at Lampeter. Jeff also captured
several major awards, including
the top carcass lamb on foot.
In the much larger 50-lamb
market competition, Kevin
Martin, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Clyde M. Martin, East Earl, found
himself in the grand champion
winner’s circle with his 110-lb.
Suffolk.
The champion nods were given
to the Martin lambs by Bill
MacCauley, Atglen Suffolk
breeder, who offered many
valuable showing and
management tips to each
youngster as he made his way
through the various classes.

Four litter mates on Tuesday

Tun and Mike are trying a two

of the family’s Duroc boars.
“We’re trying to add a little
breadth to the long, muscular
frame,” Tim explained.
And also there are four Spotted
boars out of the litter up for sale.
The Pfautz heavyweight tipped
the scales at 248 lbs. in the show
dominated by heavyweights.
Three-quarters of the entries in the
48-hog show were heavyweights up
to 278 lbs. But judge Gary Dean, of
Strasburg, praised the youthful
exhibitors for the non-greasy
condition of their entries.
The Pfautz brothers also shared
the top two spots in the senior
showing, with older brother Mike
coming out on top. He battled the
nasty disposition of his entry in the
early evening heat and worked the
