Beaver Fair honors

BEAVER SPRINGS - The
summer ended in fine style with a
good crowd coming from across
Snyder and surrounding counties
to enjoy the Beaver Community
Fair, Sept. 17-22.
The dairy show was judged by
Kenneth Grube of Lititz (fitting
and showing) and Harold Davis,
Huntingdon (type). Ninety-six
cows were entered into the com
petition.
Grand Champions for the show
were Level-View N. Farm, R 1
Beavertown (Holstein Open);
Deborah K. Reich, R 1 Winfield
(Holstein 4-H/FFA); Donald G.
Walters, R 3 Middleburg (Open
Ayrshire Open), Jamie Walter, R 3
Middleburg (Ayrshire 4-H/FFA);
Steve Opdyke, R 2 McClure (Open
Jersey): Kathy Waite, R 1 Winfield
won by his Southdown ram lamb at Beaver Fair.

Showmanship honors in the
Senior Division went to Karen
Blank. Kenneth Blank took Grand
Champion Fitter in the same
division. Tonja Scholl won both
showing and fitting awards in the
Junior Division.
Livestock was also judged in
beef, hog, and sheep categories.
Dale Alderfer, R 1 Mt. Pleasant
Mills, took the 4-H/FFA Grand
Champion honors ,vith his
Charolais steer. Chad Hummel, R 5
Selinsgrove, owned the Reserve
Grand Champion, an
Angus/Chianina cross. Chad
Hummel also took the master
showing and fitting honors in the
beef judging.
In the hog competition, Chad
Hummel’s animal took Grand
Champion market hog and Sandra
Troxell, R 1 Beaver Springs, owned
the Reserve Grand Champion
market hog.
Sarah Fleener of Lancaster
judged the sheep competition.
Henry Zerby of R 1 Beavertown
showed the Supreme Ram and
Ewe, both Hampshires. Jim
Kodlick, R 1 Beaver Springs,
Young winners selected at Indiana County dairy shows
INDIANA Two rainy and
dreary days were'the setting for
the Indiana County Fair’s open and
junior dairy shows. Even though
the weather outside was gloomy,
the atmosphere inside the show
ring was filled with excitement.
Steven Mo wry judged the open
show, while David Rynd of Sharon
judged the junior dairy show. Judy
Black of Tyrone had the difficult
job of choosing the best junior and
senior fitters and showmen.
Once the champions were chosen
and everyone had a chance to
catch their breaths, 14-year-old
Greg Edwards found himself at the
top of the ladder.
Son of Raymond and Sandy
Edwards, Indiana, Greg was the
recipient of the champion Holstein
award for both the 4-H and open
shows. Jody Nesbit, daughter of
Jerry and Karen Nesbit, Mar
chand, stood as runner-up to Greg
with the reserve grand champion
award.
Susan Nehrig, daughter of Ed
and Ginny Nehng of Homer City,
was the top winner in the Brown
Swiss breed, Sharon Bnckell stood
second only to -Nehrig with the
reserve grand champion Brown
Swiss of the show.
Green Slope Farms stood on top
in the Guernsey competition in the
open show, while Heath Win
sheimer, a county 4-H’er, took the
top honor in the junior show.
Allison Brickell, daughter of
Judy and Bill Brickell, received
the highest honor in both shows
with her Jersey cow. Allison also
captured the reserve champion
title in both shows.
After all the type judging was
completed, Judy Black brought the
top fitters and showmen back into
the ring for the final judging.

in both market and livestock
categories. The Reserve Grand
Champion lambs in both
categories were owned by Daren
Klitzsch, R 1 Port Trevorton. Kelly
Bergstresser, R 3 Middleburg, took
Senior Fitter honors and Michael
Troxell, R 1 Beaver Springs, was
Senior Showman. Matthew Zerby,
R 1 Beavertown, was the Junior
Division Fitter and Showman.
During the Thursday evening
livestock sale, the top steer
brought a bid of 92 cents a pound
from N-S- Troutman & Sons,
Freeburg. The Charolais, owned
by Dale Alderfer, weighed 1,175
lbs. Metzger Meats, Winfield,
bought the Reserve Grand
Champion steer for 87 cents a
pound from Chad Hummel. The
steer weighed 1,185 lbs. Total beef
sales ranged from 69 cents to 92

drew $2 a pound from Keister’s
Middleburg Auction. The
York/Hamp/Duroc triple cross
weighed 230 lbs. The 220-lb
Reserve Grand Champion hog,
owned by Sandra Troxell, was sold
for $1.50 a pound to the Farm
Credit Service. Market hogs sold
from 65 cents to $2 a pound and
sales totalled $3,219.
Market lambs brought a high
price of $2.55 a pound for Jim
Kodlick’s 95-lb. Grand Champion
lamb, purchased by NCR Bank,
Middleburg. Dutch Kitchen
Restaurant, Port Trevorton,
bought the 90-lb. Reserve Grand
Champion lamb from Karen
Klitzsch for $2.05 a pound. Lamb
sales ranged from 75 cents to $2.55
a pound and totalled $1,451.
