Berks County, where her
responsibilities include the 4-H,
livestock and dairy programs.
A native of Homer City, States
received her bachelor of science
degree in animal production from
Penn State. She is currently
working toward a master’s degree
in Extension education, also at
Penn State.

The commissioner spent most of
the day visiting classrooms,
touring the farm complex and
other agricultural facilities, and
meeting with students and their
professors.
He switched roles from com
missioner to mason early in the
afternoon, however, to lay the
cornerstone for the building which
is being constructed at the farm
complex.
College officials said funding for
the project, which has an April 1,
1985 completion target date, came
largely from the Educational
Foundation of Alfred, Inc., a non
profit corporation which supports
college programs through
disbursement of funds donated by
private individuals and businesses.
Of the $lOO,OOO initial outlay, the
foundation contributed $70,000,
with $21,000 secured (for equip
ment) through a federal grant and
about $9,000 from college funds.
David H. Huntington, college
president, believes the School of
Agricultural Technologies will be
able to expand its animal
husbandry curriculum “by one or
more courses” in swine production
and thus be able to attract more

marketing techniques.
Commissioner Gerace pointed
out that New York currently has an
"image problem” in that many
within and without the state fail to
recognize that agriculture is New
York’s number one industry.
Daniel Langhans, college
technical assistant and project
director, said the building will
contain 5,388 square feet and that
the work will be done largely by
students enrolled in the Building
Construction program at the
college’s School of Vocational
Studies in Wellsville.
Langhans said the facility will
feature the latest advances in
ventilation and manure handling
systems; it will have a 500-animal
capacity and will be built of
cement block, with aluminum
siding and metal roof; the main
building will be 42-by-114 feet, with
another 20-by-30 foot area for of
fices, a well house, sow wash area,
and observation area.
