Carving of the Dutch home and
windmill takes John about eight
hours. The total time involved in
each protrait would also include
time spent selecting the wood,
sanding, staining, varnishing and
attaching the hanger to the back,
adding another eight to 10 hours to
the total time.
When setting prices, John says
he concentrates more on what the
public is willing to pay than on how
much time he spends on the piece.
One of the longest carvings that
John has done was a six-foot
picture of horses grazing in a field.

white paint to make them look
even more real.
Scenes of his native Dutch
homelife and of Dutch dwellings
are also special pieces. His
collection includes several wood
carvings of his family’s farm.
John also creates a picture
depicting the five dairy breeds
that is sure to catch any dairy
farmer’s eye. He carefully etches
out the characteristics of each
breed and stains th% color
markings as close to reality as
possible. Although he doesn’t have
one of these in his display right
now, he does have pictures of them
in his album.
“This is just a hobby,” John
stressed over and over agin. “I
just like to do wood carving. It’s
not a business and is not meant to
be.”
